An Inspired Chat with Jason Dang of Meyerland / Bellaire

Jason Dang shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jason, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
KnowBreaks on a normal daily-basis is teaching and elevating the Breaking in the Houston community! It is a place where young minds can cultivate their love and displine in their love for Hip Hop, particularly Breaking. It is with great pleasure and honor to offer an environment where talented and unique individuals can learn, grow, and develop themselves in Breaking / Life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
KnowBreaks was founded February 2022 and started offering Breaking classes, other forms of Hip Hop movement, Acrobatics, and Yoga in June 2022. Since launching, we’ve worked with youth, artists, and dancers across Houston to build a space where Hip Hop lives, breathes, and grows. Since the beginning, we’ve continued to evolve and grow.

KnowBreaks is a Breaking program dedicated to elevating expression through the discipline of Breaking, while illuminating the arts and culture of Hip Hop. We provide accessible, high-quality training that honors each individual’s unique path. Through challenge, consistency, and community, we empower dancers to push boundaries—both in Breaking and in life.

As we grow, KnowBreaks continues to shape the future of Breaking in Houston—one student, one battle, and one class at a time.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The first steps of a Breaker is one of the most powerful feelings an individual can feel. From saying, “I can’t do it…”, to “I did it!” is amazing to witness. They step into a world of impossible possibilities that can be applied in many realms of life.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
There are others that love and think about Breaking just as much or more than you. They could use some guidance or a place to be themselves. Share your story!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
Foundation is important. It is what makes what we practice, what it is. There is no going around it. Find joy in those foundations.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I’d feel immense regret if I didn’t even try to follow this passion.
