Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Devine.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have more than 20 years of experience, which includes serving as the controller for an internationally respected commercial real estate investment, management and brokerage firm. I was responsible for all aspects of accounting for the operational divisions, which included internet services, real estate development, property management, brokerage services, and club activities. Since it was an international company there was the need to report in both domestic and international currencies. I specifically utilized the cross-currency functionality of software to report multi-currencies out of one system (versus dual entry), ultimately saving the company hundreds of thousands in man power. However, after creating a well-oiled machine, I got bored and needed a change.
The idea of running my own business and doing exactly what I love has always been my dream. In 2011, I had the opportunity to purchase Accounting & Technology Solutions from the previous owner. Accounting & Technology Solutions is a certified reseller of the software Microsoft Dynamics SL (formerly known as Solomon). I then merged Accounting & Technology Solutions into Devine Consulting to encompass my accounting professional expertise with the software side of the business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve had our rough patches, but by far the hardest part was taking the leap from the corporate world into the unknown. I always say that you don’t know what you don’t know, and I had to learn quickly the sales, marketing and networking that went into starting your own business. I have learned that you must always be flexible and roll with the punches. From being understaffed to the occasional rapid change in clientele, it has been a rollercoaster at times, but I wouldn’t change it for anything! I get so much satisfaction out of being able to help others and cherish feeling appreciated when I can help our clients.
Devine Consulting LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Devine Consulting is an accounting and information systems advisory firm that provides custom accounting solutions to both growing and established businesses in the Houston area. We cater our monthly services to what the client needs, from monthly reconciliations to full back office accounting.
We are different because we offer a uniquely personalized experience for each client based on what they need. Other firms often have a one-size fits all approach. We have real people that they can call and talk to. Lastly, we really care about the success of the companies we work with, and don’t want to just be another expense to them.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think that success can be marked when you have gotten to a point where if there is a disappointment financially, it isn’t the end of the world for your business. I would also add that being known in the community and having a good reputation with current and former clients is another way to measure our success within our relationships. I think we have been fortunate enough to be successful by those criteria and hope to see Devine Consulting continue growing. I hope to see our staff double in size, which would allow for each team member to be more specialized in what they are working on.
