Exploring Life & Business with Leah Singer of Root to Rise Counseling and Wellness, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Singer.

Hi Leah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey has been meaningful—but far from smooth.

From a young age, I was deeply curious about the “why” behind human behavior. I was drawn to understanding the many factors that shape how people move through the world. At the same time, my early life experiences gave me a front-row seat to the realities of complex trauma and mental health struggles—especially what can happen when support is limited or absent. While those experiences were challenging, they also cultivated a deep sense of empathy, compassion, and respect for the complexity of the human experience.

Turning that curiosity into a career was a long and demanding process. It took over eight years of education, more than a decade of clinical experience, and countless sacrifices to build the foundation for my work today. I was the first in my family to graduate high school, and I worked full-time while earning my associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. There were many late nights, moments of uncertainty, and periods of self-doubt where the path forward felt unclear.

There were also detours—times when things didn’t go as planned, when I questioned whether I was on the right path, and when the weight of responsibility felt overwhelming. But each of those moments taught me something invaluable. They strengthened my resilience, clarified my purpose, and deepened my commitment to this work.

I didn’t do it alone. Mentors, loved ones, and community support played a critical role in helping me stay focused and grounded. And through it all, my husband has been my greatest source of support. He has consistently seen my potential, strength, and capability—even in moments when I struggled to see it myself. During the toughest seasons, he mirrored back my strength and determination, grounding me in what I was capable of and reminding me to keep going when things felt uncertain or overwhelming.

All of these experiences—both the struggles and the triumphs—became the foundation for my clinical work and ultimately led me to open my own private group counseling practice. And while those milestones were significant, it was becoming a mother that truly solidified my sense of purpose. It deepened my understanding of care, responsibility, and connection, and reinforced not just what I do—but why I do it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the owner and clinical director of Root to Rise Counseling and Wellness, a private group counseling practice in Houston, Texas. We serve children, adolescents, teens, families, adults, and seniors—many of whom are high-achieving professionals, entrepreneurs, parents, and individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and substance use. Through individual therapy, group therapy, and trauma-informed yoga, our work centers on supporting people as they navigate life as it meets them.

What I am most proud of is the practice I’ve built—one that is deeply human, relational, and grounded in authenticity. Root to Rise was created from a desire to do things differently: to put people first, not only the clients we serve, but the team behind the work as well. I opened the doors to my practice just before becoming a mother, and in the past 2.5 years, both my family and the practice have grown. I am now a mother of two and lead a team of clinicians who share a similar lived experience—ambitious, dedicated women balancing both family and meaningful careers.

I’m known for creating a space where people feel seen, understood, and at ease to show up as they are. My approach is down-to-earth, relational, and grounded in meeting people where they are without judgment. I bring depth and connection, and advocate for real, sustainable change—not quick fixes.

Our clinical philosophy is rooted in trauma-informed, person-centered care. While we tailor each therapeutic experience and draw from a range of modalities, the client always guides the work. We honor their history, their limits, their lived experience, and their comfort. We recognize the therapeutic alliance as a powerful experience—one where clients are not only heard, but truly seen in their humanness. It’s not just about what is said, but also what is felt, heard, and experienced in the room.
This philosophy extends beyond our clients and into the culture of our practice. In a field where burnout is common and rigid structures often dominate, I’ve been intentional about creating a space that supports both professional excellence and personal well-being—especially for working mothers who are often asked to choose between the two.

Root to Rise is more than a counseling practice—it’s a reflection of what I believe is possible when people are supported, empowered, and met with compassion at every level.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is the ability to move through life with presence, ease, and intention. I feel most fulfilled when I’m grounded in the moment—when there’s a sense of calm, clarity, and connection in my environment, in my relationships, and within myself.

I find happiness in the ability to pivot with life rather than resist it. When there is a sense of flow, of equanimity, where things don’t have to be perfect to feel good. It’s when I can meet challenges and changes with steadiness—without unnecessary stress or overwhelm.

I also experience happiness through gratitude and alignment. When I’m living in a way that reflects my values and decisions are made from that place, life feels more fluid, more meaningful.

Ultimately, what makes me happy is being able to meet life as it comes with presence, perspective, and a grounded sense of calm.
