Exploring Life & Business with Lauren Preston of Unique Behavior Supports & Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Preston.

Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path into Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) began with my sister. She has profound autism, is non-vocal, and engages in behaviors that require a high level of support. As she grew older, access to services and resources to support her became increasingly limited. Many ABA companies were unable to accept her due to her being above their age caps or her meeting exclusionary criteria based on her behaviors.

These experiences have always stayed with me. When I entered the field professionally as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), I saw these same patterns playing out for other families whose children were transitioning into adolescence and adulthood, or whose behaviors left them excluded from services. Strong early intervention, and then a cliff. That is what led me to build Unique Behavior Supports and Services (UBSS). As individuals grow, there is frequent change throughout their lives, and the support around them should evolve too.

We have no age cap and provide a range of services designed to meet the needs of all families that have a loved one with unique abilities. With our private pay model, we are able to bypass insurance determining what goals should be targeted and prioritize goals that work towards increasing an individual’s ability to participate in activities that are most meaningful for their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not always been smooth, but every challenge along the way has been purposeful. Building something from the ground up taught me quickly that nothing in business is ever truly linear. The systems that work in the beginning may need to adapt, and being willing to do so has been one of the most important lessons I have learned.

I also came to understand the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people, especially in those early years when you are still figuring things out. Throughout every obstacle, I have remained rooted in my faith. Each challenge has been an opportunity that refined me in ways I never anticipated and UBSS is so much better for it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Unique Behavior Supports & Services?
Unique Behavior Supports and Services is a BCBA owned private practice built on the belief that every individual deserves access to meaningful support regardless of their age, ability, or the complexity of their needs. As the founder, I bring both professional expertise and lived experiences that give me a deeper understanding of what families navigate, clinically and personally. That perspective shapes everything about how UBSS operates.

What sets UBSS apart is not just what we do, but how we think. We offer a range of ABA and supportive services including In-Home ABA, Crisis Behavior Support, Behavior Consultation, Special Event Services, and Respite Care. Our services are designed to meet families where they are and support them across environments. We work with individuals of all ages, including those with complex needs who have often been turned away elsewhere. We also approach goal setting differently. We ask families and individuals to think beyond today. What does life look like five years from now? Ten years from now? What does the future look like when circumstances change? Those answers shape the goals we work toward together.

UBSS is private pay, which means that insurance is not the primary factor determining the direction of care. We are proud to offer services where everyone is considered and welcome.
