Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Quinn.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up drawing on reams of used copy paper my dad would bring home. entertainment before video games and Internet. Two doors down from the Doolin Ceramic Studio. I started making creatures at 10 years old.
I failed out of pre-vet so I changed my major to art. I took ceramics and started making more creatures, got a six week show at Chuy‘s #1 in Austin Tx, it went on for 18 years. Developed national accounts with 150 stores. Now currently doing social media full time, with my art business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say staying positive when things slow down and stay going when things are good!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m am know for sculpting expressive fish art. I love creating big angler fish or what we call tooth fish. I sculpt mask and all kinds of creatures. I think what sets me apart is how different my style is from others, it’s very cartoony and I have stayed consistent my whole life.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would suggest to pick one thing that you like and do 1 million variations. Eventually, your style will become recognizable and unique, embrace your individual perspective of what makes you unique. Be seen, do art shows and attend events, stay in the mix! Be your biggest fan and don’t be shy. Above all be prolific!
