Today we’d like to introduce you to Shantel Carter-Pierson.
Hi Shantel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started SheIgnite Society out of my own lived experience as a first‑generation woman navigating career, financial, and leadership spaces without a roadmap. As I advanced professionally, I realized that being “first‑generation” extends far beyond education or finances. Many women, including myself, are the first in their families to break cycles. First to have a healthy co-parenting relationship, first to build businesses, first to choose marriage before motherhood, or first to pursue a different path than the one modeled for them. These experiences come with both pride and pressure, and they often happen without guidance, mentorship, or a supportive community.
Seeing how isolating this journey could be, I created SheIgnite Society as a space where first‑generation women could learn, grow, and connect through applied‑learning workshops and authentic relationships. What began as a response to my own challenges has evolved into a mission‑driven organization dedicated to advancing economic mobility and personal empowerment for women who are forging new paths in their families and communities.
Through intentional programming, community building, and early investments in infrastructure, SheIgnite Society has grown into a place where women feel seen, supported, and equipped to move forward with confidence. My personal journey continues to shape the organization’s direction, ensuring that everything we build remains aligned with the real needs and lived experiences of the women we serve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to building SheIgnite Society has not been smooth, but the challenges have shaped both the organization and my growth as a founder. One of the most significant struggles has been navigating the realities of building a mission‑driven community without generational guidance. As a first‑generation woman myself, I have had to learn every aspect of entrepreneurship, community development, and program design from the ground up. Balancing the demands of creating meaningful programming, maintaining engagement, and restructuring the community to better serve our members required resilience, clarity, and a willingness to pause in order to rebuild stronger.
Another challenge has been expanding SheIgnite Society while simultaneously breaking cycles in my own life. Developing the SheIgnite Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status, investing personal resources into our platform and marketing, and rebuilding the community after restructuring all required persistence and long‑term vision. These obstacles have reinforced why this work matters and why first‑generation women deserve spaces designed specifically for their journeys. Each challenge has ultimately clarified our mission and strengthened our commitment to creating meaningful, lasting impact.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work focuses on creating transformative learning experiences and community support for first‑generation women through SheIgnite Society. I specialize in applied‑learning program design and community development, drawing from my professional background as a Program Director in vocational education and in operational management within the healthcare sector. These roles strengthened my ability to build structured, outcomes‑driven programs and support diverse adult learners. Skills that directly shape the workshops and initiatives we offer.
What sets me apart is the combination of my lived experience as a first‑generation woman and my professional expertise in program development and operations. I understand the unique challenges our members face because I have navigated them myself, and I pair that insight with the ability to build systems and learning environments that create real impact. I am most proud of the community we’ve built. One that women chose to return to even after a temporary pause, which reflects the authenticity, trust, and value at the heart of SheIgnite Society.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor has not been a smooth or straightforward process for me, and I have been blessed to find one through the Houston Urban League, Small Business program. In a world where so many people charge for access to their knowledge, and where not everyone who offers mentorship is truly skilled at mentoring. It can be difficult to find someone who is both genuine and aligned with your values. I have learned to be intentional about seeking people who demonstrate integrity, consistency, and a willingness to pour into others without transactional expectations.
My goal is to one day become the kind of mentor I’ve always needed. Someone who supports women who are truly committed to doing the work, breaking cycles, and building something meaningful. I believe mentorship is most powerful when it is rooted in authenticity and shared purpose, and I aspire to offer that level of support to others as I continue growing on my own journey.
