An Inspired Chat with John Sevey

We recently had the chance to connect with John Sevey and have shared our conversation below.

John, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day is waking up, wheel chairing to breakfast, drink 2 cups of coffee. listen to you tube to wake up and roll over to my drawing desk and start doing art all day long. Just breaking for breakfast lunch and dinner. I spend a lot of time getting into the details and color scheme in my art. I message people I share photos of my art, I do take about two coffee breaks usually with fruit. I also design really kick butt clothing. I have done many photo shoots with models in my clothing, the clothes are awesome. I have strategies I use to get things done, including CDs, DVDs, and Mp3s that range from fitness to exercise, to meditation. I have a rather large library of these. My days follow one another closely, fully paying m attention to detail.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I primarily gift art and clothing to people, for a cause, like volunteering. if there ever is a fee there’s a reason why. I will never run out of things to draw or paint or do art with. I stay home primarily. I have a really good college education. I would like to extend my hand to anyone out there that likes to work with other people. I want to work with the theater scene of Houston. And I’m open to private consultations and I can design interior and exterior art themes for people. Vex Nation means EX Victim or Victimless Experience, so if you like art that will change your mood or brighten your day or night you can find it here. Vex Nation is my cause.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I went snowboarding and learned it instantly because I was a really good skateboarder, Mike Tully could tell you that. When I was young and was kissing girls. When I read Ninja Magazine. Skateboarding in Manhattan and Los Angeles, and at the Powell Peralta Facility. Riding my motorcycle in California. Hanging out with my first crush, Erika Biddle, at concerts and in Greenwich Village. Having four jobs while in school.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Keep on your path it’ll reveal the time to do. and the time to don’t. Just study and do art, paint draw, save. Build your art wave off of earlier works. they’re there for that. keep with the museums and the libraries, especially the college ones. Study books on art. Study DVDs on art. Study Art live. Keep Rebekah as friends. and take your vacations.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes it is, because all of it comes from my heart. I like my monicker. I love the permutations of the names I have given myself. I wear my clothing myself. It is EX Victim, because I don’t play that card. And let’s make life a Victimless EXperience, using art and clothing. I do custom work real well. I support my creation. I go to long lengths to perfect it.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
He created something that was totally human, and expressive enough to make people think differently. He loved life. He made you love life. he cheered up groups of people that needed it. He definitely left his mark. He connected people and networked them together. He definitely used his Education.
