Meet Deidre Mathis of Wanderlust Houston: Private & Shared Accommodations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidre Mathis.

Deidre, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I fell in love with hostels years ago during my travel gap year where I traveled to 12 countries in less than a year, all alone. When I relocated to Houston in 2014, I knew that it was a perfect city to open an international hostel!

Houston is home to over 11,000 restaurants, an amazing theater district, the annual Rodeo, the infamous NASA museum, dozens of green parks, and so much more!

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come through Houston and I decided having a place where travelers could come meet new friends and explore this great city without breaking the bank was exactly what needed to be done!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No! Starting a business is tough, very tough. Everything from writing a business plan, getting funded, finding property, were all extremely tough, but I did it! There have been nights I have stayed up all night, many nights I have cried because I was super frustrated, and many days I wanted to just give up but I didn’t. Being an entrepreneur is hard work, but honestly, I am so in love with it and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Please tell us about Wanderlust Houston: Private & Shared Accommodations.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have hired help from day one! There is no healthy way to start a business alone. So many people are afraid to trust someone else with their vision, but I’ve learned it’s super important to have someone there to help you with your day to day tasks.
