Conversations with Nicole Messer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Messer.

Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been creating art since I was a child, photographing since I was a teenager, and always intrigued by what I could create. A plethora of artistic media has interested me over the years, with painting, drawing, and crafting still prominent hobbies of mine. But when I started photography about two decades ago, I knew that I wanted it to become my career. I pursued the hobby, making it a passion that eventually morphed into my career after studying it and other fine-art in college. Today, I’m using all those years of experience and my fine-arts background to bring vivid color, bold story telling, and journalistic intrigue to the photos I capture for my variety of clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art was always the road I was going to go down, so my inherent drive to create was always alive. But choosing art as a career, especially as the modern age changes so swiftly, soon proved to be a challenge in itself. What I’ve learned is that you need to keep exploring, learning, evolving, and attempting until you get over the hills that stand in your way. Education and experience are pivotal in this career, so investing in both will prove fruitful in time. I’ve put in so many years of formal education, self-teaching education, and immeasurable hours of hands-on experience to get to where I am today, about twenty years after I first picked up a camera.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Not only do my lifelong love of art and two decades of working specifically in photography set me apart. But also, what people wouldn’t naturally know, is that I am constantly pulling from years of studying art history, years of fashion/conceptual studio art, years of commercial work, years of strictly drawing and painting projects. All of this and much more comes together to create my present style, way of working, mode of processing, and ultimate vision through photography. That’s why I promote myself as an artist, who is also a photographer, because this art form goes so much deeper and means so much more to me than simply pressing buttons. I’ve showcased both my paintings and photography in many gallery exhibitions and publications over the years. I’ve traveled around the country and the globe to study art and experiment with photography. My work is backed by decades of artistic drive and years of honing my digital art, traditional art and photography skills. All of that history informs the way I photograph weddings, families, portraits, commercial campaigns, and unique events — allowing me to bring a special artistic depth and decades of creative intention to every client and project.
