Thought-Provokers: Downtown

Houston has always had an artistic soul.  The culture and heritage of our city, like most great cities, owes a tremendous debt to the arts community.  Supporting local art is something we care deeply about and we’d like to do everything we can to help the local arts community thrive.  Unfortunately, too often media attention is monopolized by corporate interests and tabloid gossip – but culture doesn’t come from a focus on celebrity breakups it comes from a focus on the arts.

Below, you’ll find some incredible artists from in and around Downtown that we hope you will check out, follow and support.

The art I produce as a photographer is a collaboration between myself and the women sitting in front of my camera. One of the joys of making art for me is the unknown, I don’t know these women’s stories or backgrounds until we meet in the studio. Boudoir photography involves a lot of trust and vulnerability. Read more>>

I think everyone has a natural born interest in something, and whether big or small, it’s important to keep it close to you. I started modeling a few years ago on the side as well; I wanted to have a well-rounded vision. Hair, makeup, photography, and editing. I wanted to be in front of and behind the camera. I want to do it all so I can truly and most accurately display my own mind. Creative directing is my goal. Read more>>

My life’s journey towards being a full-time painter hasn’t been straightforward. Although I spent a lot of my childhood drawing and painting, I was encouraged to put this aside and concentrate on getting the grades to study medicine or science. Read more>>

It took years, and I went down several paths. Many were the wrong paths though I learned quite a bit along the way. I eventually ended up writing a book about my story, and it dives deep into the gut-brain connection. It’s real, raw, dark, and humorous and 100% true! Read more>>

It has a really special way of bringing people together and making people happy. I’ve seen folks who are from different generations and have nothing in common politically come together to enjoy western swing. Whether you were there on not, it’s hard not to feel the nostalgia from the style. Read more>>

Always being ridiculed by the crowds I desperately thought would gain me popularity, I soon realized life is just more beautiful when you accept yourself for the God-Made force that you are; and for me that was the nerdy social outcast from the hood that somehow had a knack for creativity. Read more>>
