Thought-Provokers: Katy

Houston has always had an artistic soul.  The culture and heritage of our city, like most great cities, owes a tremendous debt to the arts community.  Supporting local art is something we care deeply about and we’d like to do everything we can to help the local arts community thrive.  Unfortunately, too often media attention is monopolized by corporate interests and tabloid gossip – but culture doesn’t come from a focus on celebrity breakups it comes from a focus on the arts.

Below, you’ll find some incredible artists from in and around Katy that we hope you will check out, follow and support.

It took a long time for me to truly find my voice and own my personal power, and I’ve infused that journey into my work. I love what I do! I also want women to feel empowered to pursue their calling, to take up space in the world, to do what the hell they wanna do, and to love themselves. Read more>>

I officially named my studio Half Halt and launched my first product line in the fall. I founded my design studio on principles of sustainability (quality over quantity keeps things out of landfills, using sustainably harvested lumber, using low VOC finishes, etc.) and with an awareness that aesthetics can affect our moods. Read more>>

I believe that the art we admire today, is backed by constant controversy of it deserves to be famous or not, and that is why it is. I make art because I love it, whether its a dress which I hand painted on or a giant canvas, I put my soul into each part because that is what makes art beautiful. Read more>>

I’ve always had a love for drawing since I was a child. I started drawing my favorite cartoons like The Powerpuff Girls, Totally Spies, etc., and eventually, I got into anime in middle school. That, of course, started the manga style stage of my drawing, and soon led to an interest in character concept design and more anime-inspired art. Read more>>

If I wasn’t cutting my hair, I was definitely cutting my Barbie’s hair or a friend’s hair. I was always up for a challenge. I was also excited for the “wow” factor, or my mom’s reaction, when she found out, I just got done lightening, my friend’s hair in, the bathroom. Since I was little, I was creative and loved anything beauty. I loved fashion, hair, and makeup. Read more>>

I move to Austin in my early 20’s I was a bit hesitant to leave the comfortable small-town existence, but it only took a month for me to call my parents and say “ I found my home and myself”, then slowly but surely my life started writing itself. I found myself wanting to meet all the local creatives. Luckily to me, I have found that deep down Austin has a such a diverse local art community where many people uplift each other. Read more>>

Some subjects require a hard or concrete answer all the time and that sort of rigid nature doesn’t suit me very well. The open-ended and virtually infinite amount of things I can create through art appeals to me. Not only does drawing become a mode for a creative outlet, but it became my language and my own mark in the world that’s solely mine. It’s a vestige of me that really defines a great deal of my life. Read more>>

That is how I coped. Throughout my depression, my camera was my safe haven. Once I reached high school and they offered real photography classes, my subjects changed from stuffed animals to people. This was huge for me. Social anxiety is a real thing and I was finally able to be expressive and talk with people and create with people. Read more>>

I began to realize that returning to work in the healthcare field was not a viable option for me. Taking care of myself and my family was a full-time job. I began looking for ways to use my experience and eventually created a chronic pain support group which afforded me the ability to integrate myself back into the community in a service capacity on my own terms. Read more>>

I wanted to document all the fun things we would do together and be able to look back on how much she’d grow. After owning my camera for about a year, I decided I wanted to learn how to take even better pictures and venture out of the Automatic mode. Read more>>

I needed an outlet to keep my sanity, and by the grace of God, I found something to revive my pulse. Creating for me isn’t just a hobby — it keeps me alive. Every place I explore, every person I meet, and every story I tell breathes life back into me. Without creating, I’m not sure I would be here today. Read more>>

I try to capture feeling. When I book a session, I try to gather what exactly this person is about, are they wild, free, reserved, loving, etc. I take everything into consideration and apply that to my post-production. I want people to feel beautiful; I want them to remember how they felt at this moment in time. Read more>>

I was born inquisitive, with a curious mind and a big mouth, always bent on absorbing the world around me through way to invasive questions to strangers (“Why do you have so much stuff in your garage?”) or a book, forgoing playdates with other girls my age to sit in the corner and read. Read more>>

I’ve been drawing and creating since I was in preschool, like any other child.
