Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Brave.
Hi Mya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing drag makeup in high school out of boredom and later during covid lockdowns I started buying wigs and figuring out my face better. But it wasn’t until 2022 that I stepped out in full drag for anime conventions. I would go to anime conventions in full cosplay drag and its what launched me into being a performer! I started performing at cosplay contests and my friend’s traveling drag show Electric Aura, and in 2024 I started my own traveling drag show titled Project Braveheart! With my show I’ve gotten the opportunity to do drag in Houston, Austin, Galveston, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, and South Padre Island! In my first year of doing my show I got nominated for “outstanding open stage drag show” at the 2025 SpecDragular awards in San Antonio! This year I did a hard launch on who Mya Brave is outside of cosplay and it’s been a fabulous year! I have leaned into my goth esthetic which has gotten me the opportunity to start a new alternative drag show titled Los Darketos y Más! And on top of all that I am competing in Houston’s newest drag competition CUT THROAT!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an up and down journey. On one hand a perk of hosting a traveling show is you get to meet new performers across the state and make friends in new areas, but the downside is that all the friends I’ve made through the show are across Texas and at times I’ve felt isolated in my drag journey. I was always anxious to step out in my own city since my few friends in the scene didn’t do shows very often. At one point it felt like the only solution was to move away and do my friends’ shows in the Austin/San Antonio scenes. I felt like I had to conform to get somewhere and while I can be stunningly gorgeous, I just wanted to be weird and goofy. But through it all, I’ve pulled myself up and made something great for myself and others!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think my specialty is my ability to get an audience to laugh whenever I’m behind a microphone. I often get told I have a very charismatic personality and it’s charming how funny and witty I can be on a moments notice. My friends often describe my hosting style as “controlled chaos that usually makes a point.” and I feel that sums up me in a sentence. The thing that makes me proudest has been my ability to make my own spaces in unexpected places. Like, I wanted to see more drag at anime conventions and so I pursued my own show and that got me to be nominated for an award! And this yearI wanted to have an all alternative show and it’s turned into a sold out show for the premier night! My ability to make what I want happen is what sets me apart from others. I’ve battled depression over different parts of my life and one thing that kept me going was my drive to make what I want for me happen. I think of myself as a work horse and a force that is driven by the desire to find community and happiness.
Any big plans?
I want a new job and a man!! Omg someone take me on a date tonight! But in all seriousness I’m focusing on my drag package for the CUT THROAT competition and I’m locked in on getting my show to be recognized by more people in Houston. I’m so excited to be in my first drag competition and to start a new show at the same time is crazy and stressful, but I enjoy it! Aside from that I think more life centered changes like maybe loosing 15 pounds and getting a better sleep schedule are my big changes for myself!
