Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocio Garza.
Hi Rocio, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started BYROCIO after withdrawing from St. Thomas, where I was studying to become a PA. I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do next, but I knew I had always wanted my own business and loved being creative. I had tried so many things before, from doing nails, making prints, ceramics, paintings, bracelets – but none of them really stuck. I had always loved designing invitations, presentations, and anything I could make look pretty, so when I realized web and brand design were actual careers, I was instantly interested.
My dad was a big part of motivating me to be my own boss. He had mechanic clients who needed help promoting their businesses and building an online presence, which gave me somewhere to start. In March 2023, I designed my first website and made $300. I was so proud!!! It was the most I had made from any business idea, and it didn’t feel like work at all.
Since then, I’ve designed so many brands and websites and expanded BYROCIO into content creation and marketing. Now, I’m able to help businesses at different stages, whether they need help growing their online presence or are ready to invest in a full brand or website.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I’ve learned almost everything on my own, so in the beginning, if I didn’t know how to do something, I would Google it, ask questions, and keep trying until I figured it out. I’m really proud of how much I’ve taught myself, but it has also felt lonely at times because I didn’t have someone walking me through it.
Imposter syndrome has also been very real for me. There have been times when I’ve questioned whether I was doing a good enough job or even thought about giving up. Somehow, whenever I start feeling that way, God gives me a sign to keep going, whether it’s a new inquiry or a project that reminds me how much I love creating.
More recently, the challenge has been balancing my business with working full-time, finishing my degree, and still showing up as a wife, friend, daughter, and sister. It can be stressful knowing that everything in the business falls on me, but it’s also really rewarding. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, even though I’m still learning how to balance everything along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most of my work focuses on web and brand design. I love being able to take someone’s vision and bring it to life through their branding and website. A lot of people also know me for content creation and brand shoots, which I enjoy because I get to help clients use their branding beyond just a logo or website.
I’m probably most proud of how much my work has grown. Since I’m mostly self-taught, I can look back and see how every project has helped me improve and figure out the kind of designer I want to be. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made.
I think what sets me apart is how I work with my clients. I’m naturally pretty casual, and I want people to feel comfortable with me. I don’t want it to feel like I’m telling them what their business should be. I see it more as a partnership – they know their business, and I’m there to listen, guide them, and help bring their ideas to life in a way that feels right to them.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would definitely give a lot of credit to my husband, my family, and my friends. They’ve supported me from the beginning. Anytime I booked a client I was really excited about or finished a project I loved, they were the first people I wanted to tell or show. They’ve watched me learn and have seen how much my work has changed over the years, which makes their support mean even more.
My husband has especially been there on the days when my workload felt like too much. He knows how happy this business makes me and how much I love being a business owner, so he’s always encouraged me and helped me when I needed it.
I’m also really thankful for the other social media managers and web and brand designers I’ve connected with. I’ve learned so much from talking to people who understand this type of work. And of course, none of this would be possible without my clients. Every person who has trusted me with their business, come back to work with me again, or told someone else about me has helped BYROCIO become what it is today.
