Hi Gary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Wise Real, a Houston-based hip-hop artist, and my journey has been about turning real-life experiences into something creative and meaningful. Music has been part of my life for years, but the road hasn’t always been straightforward. I’ve had to balance everyday responsibilities, working in the trades, being a father, building a career, and still finding the time and energy to keep pursuing music.
Over time, I stopped looking at music as just something I enjoyed doing and started treating Wise Real like a real brand and business. I began releasing music independently, developing my image, working with other artists and producers, and learning the business side of the industry. Every release has taught me something new about promotion, branding, networking, and staying consistent.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that success doesn’t always happen on the timeline you expect. There have been moments when I questioned whether I should keep going, but creating music has always pulled me back. It gives me a way to tell my story, represent where I come from, and connect with people who may have gone through similar struggles.
Today, I’m still growing as an artist and entrepreneur. I’m releasing new music, building relationships within Houston’s creative community, exploring different business opportunities, and continuing to develop Wise Real into something bigger than just music. For me, the story is still being written, and I feel like I’m entering a new chapter where all the lessons, setbacks, and years of work are starting to come together.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had to overcome mistakes I made when I was younger, rebuild my life, and learn how to stay focused even when things didn’t go the way I planned. There were times when music had to take a back seat because real life came first—working long hours in the trades, being a father, handling responsibilities, and trying to stay financially stable.
One of the hardest challenges has been continuing to believe in myself when progress felt slow. Independent artists have to wear a lot of hats, and I’ve had to learn promotion, branding, networking, business, and consistency while still creating the music itself. There have been moments when I seriously questioned whether I should keep pursuing it.
But those struggles are also what gave me something real to talk about. They taught me patience, discipline, humility, and how to keep moving forward. I’m still building, but I’m proud that I didn’t let setbacks completely take me away from who I am or what I want to accomplish. Every challenge has become part of the story behind Wise Real.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hip-hop artist and entrepreneur performing as Wise Real. My music is rooted in real experiences—work, fatherhood, setbacks, ambition, faith, and everything that comes with trying to build something for yourself while still handling everyday responsibilities.
What I specialize in is making music that feels honest. I’m not trying to create a character or pretend my life has been perfect. I write from what I’ve actually lived, and I think that gives the music a different kind of weight. At the same time, I’ve been learning how to build Wise Real beyond the songs through branding, visuals, promotion, collaborations, and the business side of being an independent artist.
One thing that sets me apart is that I’m building this while working in the trades and living a regular working person’s life. I know what it feels like to put in long days, handle responsibilities, and still make time for a dream. That perspective shows up in my music.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve continued creating and moving forward despite the times when it would have been easier to quit. Every release, collaboration, studio session, and opportunity like this interview reminds me that the years I’ve invested are building toward something bigger. My goal is for people to hear Wise Real and feel like they’re hearing somebody genuine—not just an artist, but a real person with a real story.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say resilience has been the most important quality to my success. I’ve learned that talent and ambition matter, but they don’t mean much if you can’t keep going when things get difficult.
There have been plenty of moments when progress felt slow, life got in the way, or I questioned whether I was on the right path. What has kept me moving is the ability to adjust, learn from setbacks, and keep working toward the bigger picture.
Resilience has also taught me patience and discipline. Whether it’s music, business, work, or life in general, I’ve learned that success usually comes from staying consistent long after the excitement wears off. I’m still growing, but I believe my ability to keep getting back up and moving forward is one of the biggest reasons I’m still building today.
