Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Malik Kutty.
Dr. Kutty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a plastic surgeon focusing on cosmetic surgery. I grew up in Chicago and went to medical school there. I completed my residency training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
I began private practice as a solo surgeon in New York doing cosmetic surgery as well as being on the academic staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Living and working in New York is really enjoyable. It’s an exciting place where my family’s life was full of excitement and great experiences. Professional life as a plastic surgeon is never boring in NY. I saw every kind of problem and over the years learned many ways to address any single one.
I moved to Houston, Texas because the winters in the Northeast were becoming progressively worse. I moved here in 2010 and established my current practice, Luxe Plastic Surgery. I’m really proud of having built a successful, busy practice. I love what I do and we have pleasant patients who leave the office happy. I feel very fortunate to be in the position I’m in, being able to do what I do.
The move has been great for my family as well. My wife Yasmin and I have a group of close friends and plenty of activities to keep us busy. My older daughter Samar is in college nearby and my younger daughter, Layla, is in high school. One of the best things about living in Sugar Land is that everything we could possibly need is within a few miles of home.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anything that’s really worth doing and is fulfilling will always be challenging at times. Starting a plastic surgery practice from scratch is a very demanding process, with long days and nights building it up. It can be anxiety-provoking and exhausting. The upside is that the hard work has paid off and I’m thrilled with what I do now.
My wife is a divorce attorney and also operates a solo practice. She endured the same arduous process to develop her practice. As one would imagine, having both spouses doing the same thing is tough on the entire family. After the first couple of years things worked out and everybody’s happy.
The other concern my wife and I had was the relocation from New York to Texas as far as our children. I’m happy to say that they’ve adjusted and now that they’re a little older they are happy to have made the move as well.
Please tell us about Luxe Plastic Surgery.
I do exclusively aesthetic surgery procedures. It’s the most rewarding work I’ve done in my career because my patients come in unhappy with something about themselves and leave feeling more confident and happier with their appearance.
The surgery I perform includes liposuction; tummy tucks; breast augmentations, reductions and lifts; eyelid rejuvenation; facelifts and neck lifts; surgery to remove the extra skin after massive weight loss; rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) and ear pinnings. The variety of problems I can correct keeps my job interesting.
My patients include women, men and even teenagers. Each group is looking for something different. My adult patients see me for the entire range of procedures. Teenagers usually see me for things such as rhinoplasty and ear pinnings.
I have developed a safe and effective method of doing a variety of procedures with local anesthesia in my office. For patients, it’s always preferable to avoid general anesthesia and having a procedure outside a hospital reduces the cost significantly. I wouldn’t do a procedure in my office if I don’t think it is absolutely safe or if I don’t believe I could get the same result as I could with general anesthesia.
My patients appreciate the amount of time I spend with them to fully understand what their expectations are. I enjoy the conversations I have with them and I can be confident that what I recommend will give them the result they want.
Another thing that sets me apart is that I use video demonstrations of actual surgery and interviews with other patients to really enhance the patient’s experience and their understanding of the process. The more information patients have, the more comfortable they are with the idea of having cosmetic surgery.
I think I am very good at putting patients at ease about safety concerns as well. My training was rigorous, to say the least. I take great care to see that patients have the result they want without sacrificing safety.
In my practice, we value customer service highly. A patient’s experience with the staff and office environment, as well as the consultation itself, give them the comfort and confidence to feel good about their decision. Many offices don’t think as much
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have two younger brothers and getting into trouble with them for many different things has to be the fondest memory for me. I don’t have sons so, I didn’t have to deal with that as a parent.
