Today we’d like to introduce you to LeFrance Burns.
Hi LeFrance, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Boxing for Bullies is a community -based boxing therapy program established in the SouthEast area of Houston, TX . Boxing for Bullies mission is to prevent youth from attempting or contemplating violent behavior toward others and/or themselves due to bullying, mental, physical trauma, low self esteem, depression, and anxiety. B4B will focus on providing therapy through boxing fundamentals integrated with life principles for the youth, especially in low income areas. It is expected that through the providing of training and life principles that it will be possible to positively impact the lives of young children of the community.
Boxing for Bullies will utilize a lead boxing coach and coaching assistants. Each coach will be expected to participate in three day training sessions held weekly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening for an hour and a half to two hours. Periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess the value of B4B on a) helping the coach assistants to become effective trainers and educators, b) the effectiveness of training activities and therapy drills for the youth, and c) the improvement and well being of children in B4B.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION/STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Major obstacles facing many children in low income areas of Houston include trauma, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, and bullying. A serious problem exists not only at home and within low income neighborhoods, but within many of the schools in these areas. Though these areas provide extracurricular activities that are geared toward inclusion and teamwork, many do not offer an outlet for the mental or physical stressors of the individual child.
(European Journal of Educational Science, 2019) An article written by Liberty University grad Kevin Johnson, M.Ed. on Chronic Poverty and its implication on bullying, trauma, and education reveal a worldwide link amongst our youth. Living in chronically impoverished areas have a higher outcome of producing youth that feel disadvantaged compared to other children in middle and upper class areas. Many of these children experience some form of chronic mental, physical or verbal trauma/abuse usually by someone older than them. Common traits of youth who are subjected or have experienced such traumas include lack of motivation, feeling that they don’t matter, shyness, anxious behavior, suicidal thoughts or attempts, urge to hurt others, inability to focus, lack of enthusiasm, etc.
After thorough review of low income neighborhoods in the Houston area along with many of the schools commonly enrolling these youth, we have found that they all have many things in common. Youth are in a daily cycle where they are not able to express themselves. Many teachers and faculty are commented on in reviews as being unengaged, Etc.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Our Mission
Boxing for Bullies is a youth boxing therapy program designed to help kids manage stress, build confidence, and overcome challenges such as bullying, school pressure, family instability, and emotional struggles. Through boxing, mentorship, and structured guidance, we provide a safe space for young people to grow stronger physically and emotionally.
Why It Matters
Too many children carry the weight of anger, depression, or loneliness without healthy outlets. Left unaddressed, these struggles can lead to negative behaviors and cycles of harm. Boxing for Bullies gives youth a positive alternative: discipline, resilience, and self-control developed inside and outside the ring.
