Hi Davila , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been one of heartfelt twists and turns, built on trust and perseverance. After earning my BFA, I began working in adult theater programs in Austin. However, life led me back to Houston to support my mom during a challenging time with her health. In a moment of uncertainty and with plans for a cruise ship job in mind, I applied for a temporary position at a Montessori school, hardly knowing anything about working with children.
What began as a short-term job quickly transformed into a five-year love affair with teaching. I discovered not only how fascinating and capable children are, but also how deeply rewarding it is to witness their growth and potential. One day, my mom gently challenged me, asking when I would truly use the degree I had always wanted. I realized that while I loved working with kids, I also longed to merge my passion for theater with that love. So, I searched for positions that combined the two and stumbled across Drama Kids. I excitedly applied, but weeks rolled by without a response.
Feeling a bit down, I decided to join some friends for a birthday celebration. After arriving late and sitting next to a coworker’s cousin, our conversation led me to share that I had applied at Drama Kids. To my surprise, she exclaimed, “Oh, that’s where I work! I can help get you an interview!” It felt like fate nudging me to speak up, reminding me of the power of connection.
After a small mix-up with my resume being sent to the corporate office instead of the local branch, I landed an interview and was hired on the spot. What started with a few classes quickly grew to me teaching nine classes each week. As I achieved successful re-enrollment rates, the owner approached me about expanding my role to help manage and grow the program. I eagerly accepted, diving into mentoring teachers, expanding our reach, and tackling administrative challenges.
Then came the storm of COVID-19. It was a tough and uncertain time, but instead of letting it defeat me, I embraced the challenge. I learned how to navigate Zoom and adapted our Drama Kids classes to keep the kids engaged. My dedication caught the attention of our corporate office, who saw the value I brought to our mission. When the owner decided to sell the company, they believed I was the perfect fit to take over because I had spent over a decade devoted to nurturing both the students and our program.
Now, two and a half years into my role as owner, I reflect on this incredible journey and the impact I’m fortunate to have on children’s lives. Despite the trials, I wouldn’t trade a moment of it. I’ve found my true path, and the peace and fulfillment I feel in my work are truly overwhelming. This was not just a chance encounter; it was my destiny unfolding, and I am exactly where I belong.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely, every job comes with its challenges, and one of the toughest for us is annual re-enrollment. In a city like Houston, which is a hub for theater, we’re competing with numerous programs for kids. However, what sets our program apart is our commitment to giving every child a voice, whether they are shy or outgoing.
We focus on providing essential skills such as public speaking, leadership, team building, self-confidence, and creativity skills that extend far beyond the stage. These abilities empower children in everyday life, from making friends and giving classroom presentations to confidently asking questions and preparing for job interviews.
Additionally, parent education is a critical component of what developmental theater is all about. When parents hear “theater,” they often think it may not be suitable for their child, leading to barriers that can be challenging to overcome. That’s why we emphasize the transformative power of theater to develop vital skills like communication, empathy, and confidence skills that everyone can utilize, from lawyers to athletes. We aim to demonstrate how these theater skills are not just about performing; they are essential for success in every area of life!

I am the Owner of Drama Kids of NW Houston, Drama Kids is a vibrant and nurturing program dedicated to empowering children through the arts of drama and theater. We believe that every child has a unique voice, and our mission is to help them discover and express it in a supportive environment. From shy beginners to outgoing performers, we provide a space where creativity flourishes, and confidence blossoms.
What sets Drama Kids apart is our holistic approach to development. We don’t just teach acting; we equip children with essential life skills that extend far beyond the stage. Our curriculum focuses on public speaking, leadership, teamwork, and self-expression, translating into real-world abilities they can carry into their daily lives. What makes you happy?
In my career, there are so many moments that bring me joy! I absolutely cherish seeing children make connections and discover that they have found a place where they truly belong. It warms my heart when a shy child finds their voice, eager to engage and be seen by their peers. Witnessing the creativity of our students is incredibly fulfilling; this new generation is bursting with laughter and fresh ideas that brighten our world.
Beyond my work with children, I find happiness in a variety of experiences- from watching live theater and concerts to attending sporting events, traveling, playing games, and enjoying movies. I believe that creativity exists in all forms and love embracing every opportunity to experience it. Engaging with anything live and hands-on truly cultivates an inspiring and creative environment, enriching our lives and those around us. Whether in the classroom or beyond, I love to soak in the beauty of creativity in all its forms!
