Today we’d like to introduce you to Darius Hester.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started painting, lawn work, and doing small house repairs at home in high school. Which are things that I retained during the years. After I left college, I started working for a plumbing company for about 2 years, which is where I learned everything from. From water lines, sewer lines, to gas lines. But once covid hit we were all let go because of quarantine requirements. I took a leap of faith and started my own Handyman services. Promoted my myself and got more work than I could handle to my surprise.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road can get a little bumpy, dealing with different customers and different personalities is a challenge. If you don’t have the right tools at the moment you might have to go buy/rent them and sometimes you don’t make anything that day. My tools have gotten stolen before so I had to start all the way over spending thousands on new equipment. If you promote yourself and manage your schedule properly, things will go pretty smooth. The more experience you have the easier the road becomes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business name is D’s Handyman Services and I do home/commercial repairs. Plumbing is my specialty but we also replace walls, fixtures, paint, install doors, ceiling fans etc. It’s basically a one stop shop. Usually someone cuts open your wall to get to something they have to call someone else to replace it. Here at D’s Handyman Services we do it all right then and there. One of my favorite jobs to do is gas/water line replacements.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future I see more of the same work as this job can get repetitive. But no house is the same. Maybe some new machines to improve on what we already can do, to make the job faster and more precise.
