Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Washington.
Hi Brandon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
From childhood, I have always had a heart for serving others. As a young person, I organized my first food pantry in Houston’s Sunnyside community. At the time, I may not have known to call it philanthropy. I simply knew that I wanted to help people.
My passion became even more personal after Tropical Storm Allison devastated Houston in 2001. My family lost our home, and we lived in a small motel for nearly a year. During that difficult time, we depended on organizations and compassionate people who provided us with food, clothing, and other necessities. I experienced firsthand what it meant to need help and what a difference it made when someone was there to provide it.
Years later, that same desire to serve led me to establish Plentiful Harvest, where I serve as Founder and Executive Director. In 2022, several members of our church and I began discussing the large number of fast-food restaurants in our community and how limited access to nutritious food was contributing to poor health. We talked about using some of our property to grow fruits and vegetables and creating a place where families could come and shop for fresh food at no cost.
It felt as though God heard that conversation. Around the same time, a friend introduced me to Second Servings of Houston. Through that partnership, surplus food from retailers such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, Kroger, and occasionally Target is transported to our campus in refrigerated vans. Plentiful Harvest then distributes it directly to families throughout our community.
What began as a childhood desire to help others has grown into an organization committed to nourishing lives and helping families access the food and support they need.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of our greatest struggles was keeping up with the overwhelming number of households that needed assistance. In 2022, our community was still emerging from the pandemic. Many people had lost jobs or experienced income reductions, and the demand for food assistance was unprecedented.
At one point, we were serving approximately 200 households each week with only a handful of volunteers. To meet the growing need, we partnered with Second Servings of Houston, the Houston Food Bank, and other community organizations. Even with those partnerships, managing such large crowds with limited manpower was challenging.
But just when we needed help the most, God began sending volunteers from throughout the community. Students from Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, and the University of Houston stepped forward to serve. Churches, businesses, fraternities, sororities, and other community groups also joined us.
What initially felt overwhelming became a powerful example of what can happen when a community comes together. Those volunteers helped us continue meeting the need while strengthening Plentiful Harvest’s foundation.

Plentiful Harvest is a community-based nonprofit organization committed to fighting food insecurity and nourishing lives. Through our grocery pop-ups, we distribute fresh produce, groceries, and other essential items to individuals and families at no cost.
Organizations such as Second Servings of Houston work with local retailers to redirect quality surplus food, which we then help distribute to families who can use it. What sets Plentiful Harvest apart is the dignity and compassion at the center of our work. We do not want anyone to feel embarrassed or judged for needing assistance. Our goal is to create a welcoming experience where every person is treated with respect.

Plentiful Harvest is still growing, and we believe this is only the beginning. We welcome individuals, churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations to join us through volunteering, partnerships, and financial support. Together, we can continue fighting food insecurity and ensure that more families have access to the food they need.
