Today we’d like to introduce you to Sushmitha Pidatala.
Hi Sushmitha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Arjuna started as a simple idea. I wanted to build something that went beyond selling home décor. I saw an opportunity to bring the beauty, craftsmanship, and nostalgia of South Asian design into the modern home in a way that felt fresh.
What began as an idea in my apartment has grown into a brand with a much bigger purpose, which is to celebrate my culture through thoughtful design and to create pieces that people genuinely connect with.
It hasn’t always been easy, and there has been a lot of learning along the way. But the heart of the brand has stayed the same. It’s about creating thoughtful pieces that feel personal, spark a sense of nostalgia, and bring a little bit of our culture into everyday life.
Seeing people connect with the brand and make these pieces part of their own homes has been the most rewarding part of the journey. Seeing how far we’ve come only makes me more excited about where we’re going next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I don’t think anything meaningful comes from a perfectly smooth road.
There were moments of uncertainty, moments when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing, and plenty of learning on the fly. Building Arjuna while navigating life, family, and everything else that comes with it has pushed me to be in constant adapt mode.
But I also think those challenges have shaped the business. They forced me to become more resourceful, more patient, and clearer about why I started in the first place. I started all this to create a space for South Asian design that feels familiar to South Asians but also completely at home to the mainstream market.
So no, it wasn’t a smooth road. But I wouldn’t change the road that brought me here.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Arjuna is much more than an e-commerce shop. It’s a creative platform built to bring artists, artisans, and customers together around a shared appreciation for South Asian-inspired design.
Our aim is to fuse creative perspectives from different cultures and walks of life, translating them into modern, practical home goods and accessories with a distinctive aesthetic. Each piece draws on the richness and timelessness of South Asian décor while reimagining it through a contemporary lens.
Arjuna is about more than the objects we sell. It’s about cultivating a community. One in which creators and consumers inspire one another, celebrate meticulous craftsmanship, and keep these artistic traditions alive in new and evolving forms. When someone brings an Arjuna piece into their home, we want them to feel they’re not simply buying something beautiful, but rather they’re becoming part of a creative current.
