Hi Jasmin , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began as a young girl who would braid anything she could get her hands on—from her dolls’ hair to the very grass in the yard. By middle school, I was experimenting with my own look and practicing on anyone who would let me. By high school, my passion had turned into a business. After a brief time at Prairie View A&M University, I realized my true calling was in cosmetology. I resigned to pursue professional training at Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails, and I’ve been loving every moment of my ten-year career in the industry ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest, it hasn’t always been a smooth road; the beauty industry rarely is. There were times when I had to dip into my savings just to cover my salon chair overhead when the clients weren’t coming in. While in school, I worked constantly until I finally graduated and got licensed. I remember passing out at least 50 business cards every single day, hoping for just a fraction of those people to walk through the door. When that didn’t immediately work, I took a job at a beauty supply store to master every product on the shelves while still handing out cards. That was the turning point. I used my retail wages to survive while my clientele finally began to grow, slowly building the career I have today.
We’ve been impressed with JaeStylez, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Jae Stylez, I specialize in the artistry of natural hair, from locs to intricate braid styles. While the beauty industry is saturated, my work ethic and focus on hair health set me apart. For me, it’s not just about the aesthetic; it’s about the results and the passion I pour into every crown. I’m especially proud of my brand’s evolution, including Marilyn Jae Cosmetics—named for my late grandmother—and my dedicated hair care line, The Lox Box. Born from a need for better ingredients, The Lox Box features our Lavender Rose Water hydration spray, Stimulating Scalp Oil growth tonic, and our water-based Crown Control gel. We’re also re-introducing our custom-made Hair Whip for deep moisture. Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Not so much of Podcast, but just keeping my faith is God and a few self help books. I love a good book from John Maxwell. And also having friends in the industry to learn from.
