Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Masulis.
Hi Allison, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started with an 2008 illegal production of Wicked Jr. (which to this day still doesn’t exist). My parents were my biggest supporters when it came to anything theater related. I’m an only child with a lot of energy and a knack for being on the stage. They took that and ran with it. I was in all the choirs growing up. When I got to high school was when I really fell in love with making a career out of theater. I was involved year round with all the plays, one acts and musicals. Les Miserablés was a huge small town hit. Seeing our community so excited to fill our 400 seat high school auditorium to see us perform was a feeling I never wanted to be without.
I went on to university after getting into a BFA Musical Theater program in Wisconsin but during Covid I had an awakening, as did most. I wanted to just skip ahead and live in NYC going to school in the heart of Manhattan. In a matter of a month I had left my colleges program, got into the Neighborhood Playhouse Meisner Conservatory in Manhattan and left for NYC. From there it’s been a crazy ride. I’ve had stages of, “What am I doing?” and “Wow, I can’t believe I get to do this for a living”.
Funny enough, I actually left Manhattan right before booking “Clue” the North American Tour. I signed a lease to move back to Chicago and got the offer the day before moving in. Things can change so fast in this industry. You could be unemployed one day and the next you are on a 12 month contract traveling the country.
I can’t wait to see what else this career holds for me. I know it will be filled with so many wonderful places, people and creations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is nothing linear about this industry so the struggle was expected. I’m a firm believer that the struggle is what makes the pay off so rewarding. I still find myself in moments of defeat and trying to quiet the imposter syndrome. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy these wins without falling flat on my face.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a stage performer. I specialize in acting and musical theater. I have been traveling with the “Clue North American Tour” for the past 12 months. We will be traveling for another 6 months starting this Sunday. What sets me apart is my adaptability. I am a female swing for the show, meaning I’ve learned all of the female roles in the show. If at any moment something goes awry, I am able to jump in and make sure everything goes according to plan. I am proud of myself for setting a specific goal and accomplishing it all while having so much fun!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I owe everything to my parents. They have sacrificed so much for me to pursue my dreams in this career. I can’t thank them enough for everything they have been and continue to be.
Sandy Faison (Professor) is my mentor from The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre. She is my biggest supporter and advocate. She never let me fall short in believing in myself.
Casey Hushion (Director) and Saki Kawamura (Assistant Director). They are the most supportive, positive and inspiring women in this industry. It’s been a privilege to learn from them and be apart of their genius vision for Clue.
