Blair, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I actually got my start in digital marketing through my own businesses. For about five years I ran Elite Training Services, a personal training business here in Houston, and at one point I was working with over 80 clients at a time. I was even featured in Voyage back then. That was really where I learned how powerful organic marketing could be, just from building a presence on social media, Google, and review sites.
After that I self-published a book, and then I launched Cannawize Co, which was a hemp brand. That one grew pretty fast because I turned the website into a resource for news and legislation updates, so people were finding us organically all the time. Around that same time I was taking a bunch of courses on SEO, AEO, digital marketing, analytics, tools like Screaming Frog, anything I could get my hands on, because I didn’t want to keep relying on agencies or paid ads to grow.
When the hemp regulations shifted, I decided to take everything I had learned and start Rank Forge Marketing. Now I work with small businesses who really need results but can’t justify spending $5,000 a month with a big agency. I try to keep it simple and focus on what actually matters, which is leads, phone calls, and revenue.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road, especially in the beginning with Rank Forge. One of the biggest challenges I ran into early on wasn’t the marketing work itself, it was educating small business owners on the value of it. A lot of them have been burned before by agencies that charged them thousands of dollars a month and had nothing real to show for it, so there’s already skepticism there. And on top of that, a lot of them think marketing means they have to become a social media influencer or constantly post reels to grow, which just isn’t true.
So a lot of what I do upfront is teaching. I explain how organic marketing and performance marketing actually work, why SEO and content and their website foundation matter more long term than chasing trends, and how the work we do compounds over time instead of disappearing the moment you stop paying for ads.
The other challenge is working within their budgets. Our services aren’t meant to be the cheapest option out there, but I do want them to be accessible to businesses that don’t have $5,000 a month to spend. So I’ve had to get really good at building strategies that fit where a business actually is right now, and scaling things up as they grow. Once owners see the results and understand the strategy, that’s when everything clicks.
