Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Hockless.
Hi Christian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Trying to understand who I was and where I belonged, who were actually friends and who was temporary — it had me believing I was a lot of things that I wasn’t and grew up always questioning what I was here to do. I felt I didn’t fit in until I realized that in itself was a gift.
I had the ability to be a part of groups. It was up to me how much or how little I wanted to be involved. I was personable, likable, able to befriend anyone who came my way. Whenever I crossed paths with others, I’d make sure to always listen and be my honest self with them, because we never know what a person might need or be going through.
Acting became my personality.
Growing up a sports kid, I found a love in the preservation of history — that capturing images spoke words no matter the person, place, or thing. There came a need to express my artistic view in a more intimate way, more personal to myself, and that’s when photography came into the picture.
I started capturing my brother at his sports games, seeing what was an insider’s view versus what was seen on and off the court. That single thought changed my approach to pictures.
It’s not what you see, it’s how you see.
It showed me that perspective is our most valuable asset.
How you’re captured is how you’re seen and remembered.
Photography became my identity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been told multiple times about “having a backup plan,” been asked if I’m sure about my decisions, persuaded to live a life that’s “safe” and stable, “just until you figure things out.” I’ve tried to convince others to understand my views.
Then there’s the realization that this is only your life.
Whenever you sign up to be in this industry, you know that the journey is going to be a long one, but also a memorable one. So you accept it for all it has to offer, believe in yourself, and do it with all your heart.
You stop doing for others and do for yourself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve only ever wanted to create memorable work. Through performing, photography, and storytelling, I’ve learned that it takes time to create something that truly resonates with people. But if I continue challenging myself, stay on my feet, and keep creating, I believe the work will speak for itself.
My view of the world is reflected through my work, and it’s that perspective I hope to contribute back to the world. Maybe, in doing so, I’ll inspire the next person to create something of their own.
“The highest human act is to inspire.” — Nipsey Hussle
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Know what you want. Know why you want it. Know why other people don’t want it. Listen to every negative thing, then do it anyways.
