Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamri Steen.
Hi Kamri, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since the beginning of social media, I’ve always had an interest in creating videos and connecting with others through a digital platform. I have also always loved being in front of a camera, whether it is using a digital camera to take selfies before selfies had a name or using my mom‘s old Samsung phone to vlog under the name “CameraKam”
It may sound bad but I’ve actually been on social media since I was 11 and I figured out that you could talk to Justin Bieber on Twitter, so that was probably the first social media platform that I got super savvy with. Then once the rise of YouTube started to happen with things like lip sync, videos, and Collab channels. But of course I was young and worried about anyone I went to school with discovering my videos. So that’s not something that I continued on with unfortunately but one thing I have always continued with is creating. Whether it be through graphic edits that would be popular on Tumblr or using cool overlays for my Instagram posts. I’ve always loved digitally creating. I just finally decided to believe in myself, not worry about the opinions of others & take posting content seriously in 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road, mainly because although I have viral videos or a lot of likes, that doesn’t always equate to money. A common misconception is that all creators who happen to go viral are making tons of money but that’s not always the truth. I started posting and creating out of passion,
not as a job & it just so happens that other people believe in me and enjoy my content. With that being said, up until earlier this year, I was working full time in a Doctor’s office for a pretty well known company. Sometimes I was staying up late editing content, editing in traffic, on break and even on the clock if I had some downtime. Now, I still work in healthcare but remotely and although there’s flexibility, it can still be an extra task for me to pump out content. I’m not a full time creator, yet.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So when I first started making content, I used to say that I had “no niche, just vibes” because I truly do just like posting whatever I want, but I know that’s not always the easiest for people to figure out if they wanna follow you or not or if brands wanna work with you or not I mean, unless they see a post of course, but I had to narrow it down into the things I like to film as well as common things that are easy for me to post. I’d say the content I specialize in would be Food around Houston, skin care/beauty and lifestyle/shopping. I would say I’m most proud of just putting myself out there and being myself. I have always been fearful of that which is why I’ve always been so hesitant to post so publicly in the way that I do on TikTok like I don’t even really post my Instagram like that because there’s a lot of people that I know and I feel intimidated, but I’m just proud of the work that I put into my videos and mentally challenging myself every day to post and be consistent. Something that says me apart from others I will say is my authenticity and my genuineness. I really just have a passion for people that’s why I work in healthcare. You know it hurts to see local, small businesses, struggling, and knowing how hard people work and how much money and time that they invest into trying to pursue their dreams so I love to showcase people who may need a little extra support
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
if I could give any advice to those who are just starting out I would say to stop overthinking and post. Don’t worry about the opinions of others not everyone’s gonna like you and not, everyone is going to be your target audience. Don’t think of posting content as a way just to get famous do it because it’s something that you’re passionate about and something that you personally enjoy. Something I wish I knew when I was starting out is that it’s okay to say no. Just because an opportunity is available, doesn’t mean more won’t come in the future if you say no to one.
