Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherita Buford.
Hi Sherita, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story began in Detroit, Michigan, where I was raised by my grandmother—a philanthropist in every sense of the word. She taught me to treat everyone with compassion, humility, dignity, and respect. She also encouraged me to be uplifting, energetic, positive, and spiritually grounded. Those values became the foundation of both my personal life and my professional journey.
As a young woman, I relocated to Houston, Texas, determined to build a better future. I enrolled in the Texas School of Business and became a medical assistant. Although I worked in that field for only about two years, the experience helped me recognize that my purpose extended beyond one profession.
I later attended Houston Community College, where I earned my first degree in Business Management. Walking across that stage was one of the greatest feelings in the world. Houston had given me an opportunity to grow, and earning that degree showed me what was possible when I believed in myself and remained committed to my goals. I continued my education at the University of Houston–Downtown, where I was given an internship with CAPROCK, a company connected to the oil and gas industry.
That internship became an important turning point in my life. I was later hired as an administrative assistant and project coordinator, which opened the door to what would become a 27-year corporate career in Houston. I worked in administrative support, project coordination, quality control, and quality management. I also worked with FEMA and Tetra Tech in disaster-recovery services, beginning with Hurricane Rita and continuing through numerous storms.
During those disaster-recovery efforts, I served in several roles, including debris monitoring, housing assistance, and intake coordination. I met people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. That work strengthened my compassion and showed me how important it is for people to have someone who will listen, guide them, and help them begin again.
My experience eventually inspired me to become an entrepreneur. I started Think Pink Hot Shot & Transportation Service LLC, a small woman- and minority-owned trucking company operating through the Port of Houston. I also served as CEO of Republic Trucking LLC, a company based in Sugar Land, Texas. After the COVID-19 pandemic, I expanded my work as an independent consultant, using my experience in business, project management, supply chain, and logistics to help other individuals and organizations move forward.
However, my heart always returned to service. That calling led me to establish A New You Community Development Coalition. Through A New You, I now help provide housing and supportive resources for veterans, individuals returning to the community after incarceration, and people who need transitional housing and a new beginning.
My story could go on forever, but when I look back, I can see how every experience prepared me for where I am today. From being raised by my grandmother in Detroit, to arriving in Houston as a young woman, to becoming a college graduate, corporate professional, entrepreneur, consultant, and community leader—every step has been connected.
I remain humbled by the journey because I know I did not get here alone. I am here because of God’s grace, my grandmother’s teachings, the people who believed in me, and the Houston community that gave me room to grow. Today, my purpose is to use everything I have learned to uplift others, restore hope, and help people create a new beginning for themselves and their families.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, my journey has not always been a smooth road. I became a mother as a teenager, at a time when I did not have much direction for my future. I had to grow up quickly while learning how to care for my child and discover my own identity. Although it was challenging, motherhood gave me purpose and taught me responsibility, sacrifice, and perseverance.
I also experienced financial hardships and made decisions—such as taking out multiple loans—that later became valuable life lessons. I faced the realities of marriage, divorce, raising a family, personal loss, and having to rebuild different areas of my life. Each season required me to grow emotionally, spiritually, and financially.
As a minority woman working in corporate Houston—particularly in oil and gas, transportation, logistics, and disaster recovery—I often had to work harder to prove that I belonged and that my knowledge and leadership deserved to be respected. There were rooms where I was overlooked, but I refused to allow anyone else’s expectations to determine my value.
My struggles did not defeat me; they developed me. They strengthened my faith, shaped my character, and gave me compassion for others who are trying to rebuild their lives. I do not tell my story from a place of perfection. I tell it as a woman who continued moving forward, even when the road was difficult. If my journey encourages another teenage mother, woman, entrepreneur, or person starting over to believe that their circumstances do not define their future, then every struggle served a greater purpose.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is centered on helping people rebuild, reposition themselves, and create a stronger future. I serve as the CEO and President of A New You Community Development Coalition, where we provide safe, structured housing and supportive resources for veterans, individuals returning to the community after incarceration, and others experiencing major life transitions.
Our work goes beyond providing someone with a bed. We strive to restore dignity, stability, and hope. We help residents connect with community resources, transportation, education, employment opportunities, and other services that can support their successful transition toward independence. I want every person we serve to understand that their past may be part of their story, but it does not have to determine their future.
I am also an independent business consultant specializing in business development, project management, supply chain, logistics, housing, and strategic planning. I help individuals turn their ideas into organized, realistic plans. Whether someone is starting a business, rebuilding financially, seeking housing opportunities, or working toward generational wealth, I meet them where they are and help them develop a pathway forward.
I believe I am known for being a problem-solver and for seeing possibilities where others may only see obstacles. People often come to me when they have an idea but do not know how to organize it, or when they have experienced a setback and need help determining their next step. I do not simply hand someone information and send them on their way. I listen, educate, encourage, and remain involved in the process.
What I am most proud of is creating safe housing opportunities for people who are too often overlooked—especially veterans and individuals returning home after incarceration. Every person deserves the opportunity to regain stability and begin again. Seeing someone enter our program uncertain about the future and later begin to regain confidence, direction, and hope is more meaningful to me than any title I could hold.
What sets me apart is the combination of professional experience, lived experience, and genuine compassion that I bring to my work. I understand corporate structure and business strategy, but I also understand what it means to struggle, rebuild, and start over. I have worked in corporate Houston, disaster recovery, transportation, logistics, consulting, and community development. Each experience allows me to look at a person or project from multiple perspectives.
Most importantly, I lead with my heart while still creating structure and accountability. I do not believe in judging people by their most difficult chapter. I believe in helping them write the next one. My greatest reward is knowing that the work I do can positively affect not only one individual, but also their family and future generations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would not necessarily call it luck. I would say that I have been blessed and highly favored.
There have been opportunities in my life that arrived at exactly the right time—sometimes through a person who believed in me, an unexpected introduction, or a door opening that I could not have opened on my own. I believe those moments were evidence of God’s grace and direction.
However, being blessed does not mean that my journey has been free from hardship. I have experienced setbacks, rejection, financial challenges, divorce, personal loss, and seasons when I questioned what would come next. Even during those difficult times, I believe God was protecting me, redirecting me, and preparing me for something greater.
I have also learned that blessings come with responsibility. When an opportunity is presented, I still have to be prepared, work hard, remain disciplined, and treat people with integrity. Faith opened many doors for me, but perseverance, education, relationships, and a willingness to serve helped me walk through them.
In business, not every opportunity has worked out as I expected, but even the disappointments have carried valuable lessons. What may have appeared to be bad luck at the time often became the redirection I needed. Some closed doors protected me, and some difficult experiences developed the wisdom I now use to help others.
So, when I look at my life and everything I have overcome, I do not consider myself lucky. I consider myself blessed, highly favored, and entrusted with a purpose. My responsibility is to use those blessings to open doors for other people.
