Life & Work with Angel V of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel V.

Hi Angel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for the arts since I was very young. Singing and dancing were my top two favorite activities. Many of my influences began simply by placing me in front of a 2000s television. From the age of 12, I joined my school’s treble chorus, knowing only that I enjoyed singing. I didn’t have any of the technical skills just yet and it was something that came off as nerve-wrecking and scary for the first 2 years. Nonetheless, I remained persistent and determined, learning new musical skills, and before I knew it, I was 17 and had participated in three different choirs, graduating as a soprano in a mixed varsity choir. After graduation, I had no idea what my future steps would be, but I knew music would remain an important part of my life. At the end of the summer, I decided to combine my existing talents with my desire to learn music production. Using only an iPhone and Garageband, I would eventually create a musical project that would serve as my debut in the music world. When I learned how much fun and rewarding it was to create something unique and fresh from my imagination, I wanted to develop this skill quickly. While in college, I experimented with music in my spare time, creating demos and smaller projects that I would eventually share on Soundcloud and other streaming services. I didn’t worry about stats or anything else because it was still a fun activity for me. It wasn’t until the end of 2024 that I sat back and considered how serious I wanted to participate in this. I determined from that point on to give this music thing everything I had, regardless of the outcome. As someone who did not grow up with much money, it took a lot of insight and determination to provide myself with something that other artists are inherently gifted with. I did not let lack of funds or resources stop me from where I wanted to go, and the message I wanted to send to very obvious listeners, even if only a few. I wanted to keep myself as close to authentic as possible while still singing about things that matter to me. As of today, I have my 2nd full album Eclipse that is growing in popularity slowly, and I have made quite a few friendships and connections that I would’ve never imagined to have years ago. I am excited for what’s to come next, whenever that is.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I struggled a lot in between the years of 2021-2023. There were often times where I played with my sound, trying to figure out what felt most like me. Since I listened to a lot of different music, I felt like the inspiration was endless but I didn’t want to feel like i was just biting off of someone who’s already established themselves. I tried different genres like pop, R&B, electronic, but I ultimately landed in the rock genre and I thought to myself, “This sound feels the easiest to express myself in.” Having little time due to being in university also became a struggle for me, and as I fought through different mental health crises, the momentum slowly decreased and I felt very uninspired for a while.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter, but I am also a self-produced artist and engineer. I have produced every single project I’ve released by myself, and that is something I am extremely proud of. I know that my persistence and drive is what will continue to set me apart from others because I am not afraid of the long journey. I am aware that building something this meaningful to me will take time and I am excited for each part of it.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Most people don’t know about my crippling anxiety that I’ve been dealing with on and off for the last few years. This type of thing would usually and almost always clash with the type of work that I am doing, but I try my best to not let it affect my work ethic. I know that the pay-off will be worth it despite how it may currently make me feel.
