Meet Courtney of Houston Sauce Co. in Central Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney.

Courtney, please share your story with us.
Houston Sauce Co. started out of excess. A buddy of mine had some extra peppers in his garden and called me over to do something with the peppers because of my culinary background. I wasn’t sure what to do until it hit me, make hot sauce! So at that point, my hot sauce adventure had begun! The first batch of sauce was so good, our family and friends encouraged us to bottle it up and sell it. It was then that we decided to start our hot sauce company. After 2 years of laborious development, Houston Sauce Co. was officially launched on Super Weekend 2017. We were able to get our sauces into various restaurants and food stores throughout Houston and gained a following from the exposure.

Later that year, we decided to invest in a BBQ Trailer. It was shortly after this time, that my wife and I decided to commit to a Vegan lifestyle. But with this new change, we were uncertain about how to move forward with our BBQ Trailer if we were no longer meat eaters. It was my wife that convinced me to offer a vegan menu instead. Initially, I was hesitant because of my love for ALL foods but made a moral decision to no longer sell food that I wouldn’t eat myself.

With my wife being a DJ and me being a Chef, a good friend of ours Candance Hubert of Natural Souls Hair Cottage offered us her space to do our events. We made our debut in the Summer of 2017 with an event called “Grill & Chill”. My wife played music and we offered our new Vegan Menu on our Houston Sauce Co. Trailer. A few events later, Tunes & Taste Buds was birthed from an idea a friend of ours had that we do an event called “Tupac & Tacos”. We loved the idea so much we continued with more events that paired food and music. So far, we’ve had events like “Beyonce & Boudain”, “New Jack Swing + Wings”, “Gucci & Gumbo” and the list goes on and on.

As our following began to grow with each event, I was laid off from my day job in November 2017. This news while initially seemed unfortunate, allowed me to explore my dreams of one day owning a Food Truck. After much prayer and consideration, my wife and I decided to go after this rare opportunity and expand our Houston Sauce Co. brand by buying a Food Truck. We decided to name it Houston Sauce Kitchen and offer a variety of Vegan Comfort foods with H-town flare. We are looking to officially launch this April 2018!

We are extremely grateful for the response and support we’ve seen thus far. None of this would be possible without our amazing Houston Sauce Co. Team (Kel & Morgan Mbadugha and Betina White). God has shown us much favor and we look forward to what the future has in store.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been obstacles that have come with starting the Food Truck. We’ve had to deal with mechanical issues, installation of equipment and a more. The main thing I’ve learned is to be patient and allow God to do things in his timing and not my own.

We are well known for our Sauces and Vegan Boudain Balls are our specialty along with other Vegan Comfort foods. We also have a well-known event series called Tunes & Taste Buds.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was creative and loved coming up with ideas for cooking. I really enjoyed trying new foods and putting things together, even at an early age.
