I began my nursing career 15 years ago, as a young, vibrant, energetic ICU/ER Nurse. After 7 years of working night shift, I decided to become a Nurse Practitioner. As a Nurse/Nurse Practitioner, I have worked in just about every area of medicine. That experience allowed me to explore all of my options and after 13 years in Nursing and getting some Medical Aesthetics experience, I was able to decide Medical Aesthetics is what had my heart. Making both women and men feel good about themselves is what I was meant to do. One day, 3 years ago, while laying on the beautiful beach of Exuma, Bahamas, I discussed the idea of opening a Concierge Style MedSpa to my husband; his response was “go for it”. Six months later, a very good friend of mine gave me a timeline to make that dream come true. I was nervous, I didn’t know if I could make it on my own.
I didn’t come from a Plastic Surgeon/Dermatologist office where I had a following of clients, I had been performing cosmetic injectables treatments for years, but those weren’t clients I could bring with me, I was going to start this business with no clients on the books. With lots of faith and encouragement, July 1, 2016, the website was up and Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetics was open to clients. I will never forget it was sometime in the evening on July 1st when I told my husband, “No one has booked an appointment” and he responded “Tamika its okay, you have only been open less than 24 hours”, and a minute later, literally, my phone dinged and there was my first appointment! I was so excited, I could not contain myself. I continued to work at my full-time job for 300 days; I worked 7 days a week for 300 days until I felt like I had gotten Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetics off the ground. Well, now, I can look back and say in my first year of business, I had over 1000 appointments and over 500 satisfied clients.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I can honestly say I have been a nurse 15 years, a Nurse Practitioner 9 years and I have never worked so hard as I have in the last 2 years. In my first year of business, I had a full-time job working 3-12 hour shifts a week, as well as seeing Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetic clients on the other 4 days of the week. As a new business, I needed to be available anytime someone wanted an appointment, I needed to be at any local community events so that I could get my business name out there. I’m a small business, which means I don’t have Fortune 500 budget allowances and I try to run a very financially lean business so that I can keep my prices affordable, and still be able to provide the top services and products to my clients. With that being said, I am the owner, receptionist, marketer, social media specialist, aesthetician, and injector, in addition to mom and wife. And although I often don’t get to bed until 2/3am in the morning. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world.
Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetics is a Medical & Aesthetics (Medspa), which means we provide cosmetic injectables such as Botox, Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero & Radiesse, Kybella, & Sculptra to name a few. In addition to those cosmetic injectables, we also offer medical grade chemical peels, SkinPen micro needling, PRP facials, NovaThread Face, Neck, and Body lifts, IV Rehydration/Vitamin Therapy, the Hangover IV, as well as a medically managed weight loss program. Initially, I started this company out as a concierge service, meaning I would take all of the services that I provided to the clients, home, office or even hotel if they were from out of town. Last year, I added “in office” appointments to satisfy the many requests from my clients. So, now, we offer both, concierge and in office appointments.
Being a Nurse Practitioner, allows me to offer a variety of services to help my clients age gracefully, beautify their skin, and enhance their natural beauty. I am also known as “GlamNP713”, which was a name given to me by one of my clients because she felt like I always made her look and feel Glamorous. All of my services have brought me lots of attention from peers and clients, but I am mostly known for the beautiful natural looking lips and cheek injects, as well as the non-surgical face, neck, and butt lift. I am most proud that Exclusive Wellness & Aesthetics, and myself have been recognized by The Houston Business Journal as a Top 40 Under 40 Nominee, Best Nurse Injector by The Aesthetics Academy as well as a finalist for Best Before & After Facial Injectable by The Aesthetic Academy in Newport Beach, CA. I was also voted RealSelf 2017 Most Loved Injector by my clients. I am an honoree of D-Mars Top 50 Health, Wellness & Medical Professionals in Houston. The one thing that sets me apart from others based on my client’s feedback is my personality and the final results are consistent.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career is when I won 2017 Nurse Injector of The Year and a finalist for Best Before & After Facial Injectable at The Aesthetic Academy in Newport Beach, CA. I did not expect in a million years that I would win. I sat at that award ceremony with every intention of clapping for the winner they were about to announce and when Dr. Ordon from The Doctors TV show called my name and announced me as the winner I could barely move because I was overwhelmed with joy! I have worked so hard to build my brand and make a name for myself in such a short period, and to be recognized in a room full of my peers and role models was the proudest moments in my career. When I was on the stage with other winners of the night which included The World Renowned Dr. Obagi, I felt like I was dreaming and knew that would be a night I would never forget.
