Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Werre.
Bob started his own studio in 1985 to serve his customers in the advertising and corporate arenas. Of course, his style of photography also included architectural, medical, industrial, public relations solutions and then lifestyle and retail. Later he split this specialty to form the FotoBeauty section of the business to help individuals and those needing a different approach with beauty, glamour, product and lifestyle photography.
Bob has always been able to be a solution to his client’s needs with eye-catching images whether made in a studio or on location nearly anywhere. As needed, a team is assembled to meet critical needs of those markets.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When Bob started his studio business, Houston was in the middle of a desperate time of low oil prices causing a domino effect in the entire region. However, many clients gathered to support his efforts, so along with some promotional efforts lead to a reasonably stable business.
As the business climate slowly changed for the better, the photography profession entered the digital age which required a very steep learning curve with considerable investment in new equipment and knowledge based applications. After equipment reached an acceptable quality level, Bob embraced its advantages and continued forward.
Although the low end of our businesses has largely been replaced by someone’s smart phone or low cost camera, the differences of real quality work is now clearly evident to his clients and customers. Bob finds that his clients appreciate his continued effort to create distinctive work that starts long before the camera enters the process.
Bob Werre Photography and FotoBeauty – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Most people who try photography are amazed how really difficult it can be to produce imagery that a customer will appreciate and use to further their business. Bob often speculates that the average ‘life-span’ of a commercial photographer is just a few years. Even those with college degrees and high end equipment eventually end up in easier trades. A famous photographer once told Bob that there are two reasons for failure–nobody likes the work or you don’t charge enough!
Thus far, despite the continual change in client mix, equipment replacement and the sometimes difficult process in understanding what a client really needs, he’ll work tirelessly to solve problems! He’s been able to maintain a level of understanding and professionalism to create visuals that clients appreciate.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Perhaps the best all-around “gold star” project was a small brochure for a swimming pool contractor. The original concept was for photography to accompany larger artwork illustrations of the featured pools. The photography took place in the winter months so we had to be careful not to show barren trees, brown grass and freezing models! After waiting for several warm days for each session the early work impressed the designers that it was decided that my photo work was strong enough to upstage the illustrations. We ended up with work that won a design contest, that pleased the client and didn’t upset the pool owners. Furthermore, we took what was basically a decorated hole in the ground and created beautifully staged photo illustrations without resorting to a typical “girls in bikinis’ look!
