Life and Work with Macy Lima

Today we’d like to introduce you to Macy Lima.

Macy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It began when I was asked to be the Godmother for my niece, Shania. I was so excited for this occasion and wanted to take on the role of organizing, planning and decorating the whole event for her. I started with the design of the flower arrangements and ended up creating the the whole event. I had no idea that this personal occasion would turn into my passion years later and when I look back, it is still one of my most favorite moments. That was 15 years ago and through those years, I have always let my creative and sometimes, wild visions come to life through scrapbooking, making custom invitations or cards, organizing Easter egg hunts, decorating for baby showers, birthdays, bridal showers, and so on. When I got married, I took the creative opportunity to decorate and style my dessert and wedding cake table. Shortly after, I found myself decorating my own baby shower. When I was pregnant with my first son, I was already thinking of the theme for his first birthday… Cowboys. After having both of my sons that is when my creative juices started to flow with every single one of their milestones. After years of constant feedback to make this passion into a business, I jumped into this world and decorated for my first client last October and have not slowed down since. I love it!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say, it has been a long road to discovery and taking a full leap. While I’m still in my first year of business there has been great lessons learned. I think the hardest part was believing that people would actually trust me to create a special moment in their lives. My family and friends believed in my work and in my talent more than I did myself. Sometimes it is easy to let doubt and fear pull you away from your dreams. It was after I had planned my son’s baptism in the summer of 2017, I had received an overwhelming amount of compliments and feedback from strangers and vendors… that got me thinking.. this might be a new path for me. My advice to anybody out there that doubts herself is to put those fears aside, have faith in your talent and pursue your dream. If you can get the complete joy of what you are doing then it’s worth the hard work and the risk.

Please tell us about Macy Lima Decorations.
As a new mom, I had spent countless hours, days, months planning special events for my kids and discovered a passion in creating unique party decorations that also provides a wonderful experience for all of the guest. That is was what pushed me into creating Macy Lima Decorations a company that plans and style parties of all kind. It starts off with a theme, or idea and later I start creating and executing a unique and personalized decor service for the guest of honor. I love to create new concepts that have never been seen before and bring my clients ideas into a large scale visual and emotional experience. I work very hard to let the guest of honor know that it is their special moment and every detail is created with them and their guest in mind. The best part of my job is that initial reaction from my client, after all, has been planned and decorated and they go OH WOW, I LOVE IT. Those are the moments I seek and I’m most proud of simply because it brings so much joy and happiness to my clients.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Pursue that dream and listen to that little voice that says… this makes you happy. Turning a hobby and a passion into a business will not be easy and still takes hard work, but it’s work you will love and enjoy to do. All of those sleepless nights and long days of hard work is all part of the journey to making that dream a reality. In this industry, you’ll come across all sorts of people… be smart and surround yourself with a team of like-minded hard-working individuals who empower other, bounce ideas over your way just because and celebrate your small accomplishments with you. I call it my woman tribe… they started like vendors and now are some of my closest friends.
