Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee’Or Meyerson.
Lee’Or, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Los Angeles when I was 29 years old, the week before 911, to be on the production side of the entertainment industry. After 911, there were no jobs and ended up working at a local deli. I met my future in-laws there and married their son, had 3 gorgeous children and became a stay at home mom.
The declining economy, my mom’s health and missing my friends and family brought us back to Texas. We did not have a lot of money, so I was constantly fixing and painting old furniture, finding ways to decorate my home on a budget. Somehow, I ended up hand making silk flower headbands for my daughter. People were buying them off of her head and so I began selling them at shows and on Etsy. I named my company after her, BeylaBlue Designs.
About 8 years ago, a friend came to me and asked to design her home on a budget. I thought she was crazy and explained to her that I had NO experience. She put her trust in me. Her home was a learning project and soon after she posted pictures and I all of the sudden I had clients. I have always heard that if you do what you love… I just never realized how much I would love designing and how much I would love this business that would find me. It’s not always easy, but I am always challenged and excited by what the day will bring.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all. In the beginning, I worked basically for free. I have no schooling or experience, and until I gained those, I was not making much money. I was very lucky to have the support of my family who believed in me and my ability. Because I have no schooling, there were a lot of mistakes along the way, on the job training, which did at times cost me money.
When I first started trying to make a go of this business, I had three very young children. My mother passed away, my ex-husband, husband at the time, lost his job and then was told he needed open heart surgery. All within a 3-month time span. It was a very scary time, but designing kept me focused. It gave me something to pour my heart into and saved us financially until he was able to heal and go back to work.
Now one of my biggest struggles is balancing being a mom and my career. I never thought I would be the single working mom of three children, but I would not have it any other way. I love what I do. Owning my own business allows me to set my time so that I can be there for them.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
BeylaBlue Designs focuses on full-service residential interior design. I love working with fabrics, mixing patterns and textures. I am most proud of starting from essentially nothing, but a love for decorating and a desire to have a home that my family is comfortable in and proud of. What sets me apart from others, is I am BeylaBlue Design, I do it all!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I wasn’t the happiest child. I put my parents and my sister through the ringer. My mom was sick from a young age. I was insecure, slightly overweight, different because I was Israeli, Jewish and had “weird” name. I was angry because I didn’t really know where I fit in.
My family and I were very close, but I challenged them. It took me a very long time to find my place and purpose in this world. I had a wicked sense of humor. I was creative, but not an artist like my mom. I was smart and determined, and when I put my mind to something, I always got what I wanted.
