Meet Robin Baker of Robin Baker Art in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Baker.

Robin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Back in the early 70’s I discovered a profound love of ceramics and spent the next 35 years successfully creating and selling uniquely glazed utility ware. Then about 9 years ago I moved from my house to an apartment and ‘lost’ my pottery studio so I stopped creating. This lasted nearly a month before I realized I was going insane not creating so having washed the mud from my hands I picked up a paintbrush and began painting on canvas.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As an impressionist/figurative artist who was cursed (perhaps blessed?) with a degenerative eye condition that is so difficult to pronounce I just call it “stupid eye”. This condition causes color tones to fade and I see mostly light, shadow and contrast in one eye, and full color in the other so rather than spend lots of money buying tons of paint, I use my bad eye to “see” and paint primarily in black and white, thus buying just one tube of paint instead of many… Yeah, I’m cheap.

Please tell us about Robin Baker Art.
You’ll find me in Studio (I’m) #1 every third Saturday Open Studio Day at The Hardy & Nance Studios. I paint in acrylics and am best known for my male nudes and that’s what kind of sets me apart from the rest… you don’t find many folks who consistently capture the male form.

I also curate, jury or present several shows a year, my next one being “Just Ink #7” in September. “Robin Baker is the best known unknown artist in Houston” – some drunk at the bar.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’ve made bad decisions in the past, primarily listening to advise and pressure from friends and family regarding my journey. If I had to do it again I’d trust my instincts. In spite of that, my journey has been a great ride, one which will continue for the rest of my life.
