Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisel Chavez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was 21 when I first introduced to insurance with an independent agent, after having several jobs (selling cars, a Spanish newspaper, a bridal gown collection department, waitress, cleaning offices, calling center) I knew that this was not where I wanted to spend my life as one day I asked the agent I was working for at that time? What would I have to do to have a successful agency like hers? She replied and I will never forget the words she said to me, she said “To throw away that idea I had because it was not easy having a business and that she did not see me ever doing something like this, I would not be able to keep up. At the moment I felt sad, angry, shocked, I couldn’t believe she was telling me this. I went home and looked at myself that night in the mirror and I promised myself that one day I was going to have an agency and as or more successful as she did.
After a few months I got the courage to quit that job and went into working for a company well branded, there I was encouraged and acquired my licenses and after 4 years of working for them, I decided that it was time to open my own agency. I went ahead and not knowing much how to run a business, no mentor, not a single guide, I did not even know how to do pay a staff, I thought to myself she was right it was not easy to run a business but I knew I did not want to go back. I hired my first help and took it day by day. Sure I made mistakes, fell many times but I always got up, shook it off and continue, as I had 3 children that depended on me, and I knew I wanted for one day my children could look back and say that is my mom full of proudness. I have a decent agency where I offer a variety of products. I love learning every day something new, every day is a new challenge.
I recently reached one of my dreams I had to put aside for many years. Becoming a real estate agent, and I am looking forward to helping many families out there to have their dream house and looking forward to learning in the world if investing in real estate. In life, you will have bad and good things happen. These happen for a reason and it takes mistakes to learn and make it correct. Everything happens in the perfect time, and I now can focus on my new project and with my daughter who just like me has passion in becoming an entrepreneur and is currently my right hand helping me at the office, I have no doubt we together will grow bigger and become examples for others. I thank God first of all because without him I would not be where I am at and I thank my family and those friends who supported me throughout my journey.
I want to tell every person out there that it is never too late to become what you want, do not let someone else tell you what you can or cannot do. All you need is heart. Get up take the 1st step and don’t look back and if you fall get up and continue the path. I was a single mother of 3 who only completed high school but I knew one thing always, I did not want to work for someone else always. I wanted to own my own business and go after my dreams. I am still not done I have just begun. I have air in my lungs, 4 beautiful children and a loving husband and God as my guide, like they say the sky is the limit.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course NOT it has not been easy but I love what I do and I decided not to quit on my first fall or my second or my third and so on. I have had to sacrifice time with my family which it is really hard because time will never come back.
I had to go to work 2 weeks after my daughter was born. I am not going to sit here and say everything has been pretty in pink, by all means, there were times I wanted to quit which I if not mistaking did a couple of times but somehow I always managed to come back to the same field.
I stopped fighting it and new that I was just running away from my own self, I took the bull by its horns and faced the problem and analyzed it and reached a solution. I continued, I understood that this is what I love to do and I was not going to be happy anywhere else.

In my business, I have created a family orientated atmosphere where we help out people, not only selling them a piece of paper but educating them with insurance knowledge. I believe everyone out there should know the different options they have when it comes to buying insurance. We represent about 30 different companies for every different situation. We can ensure about almost anything or anyone, from your auto, home, business to even pets. I love to get to know my clients individually, know them by name not by a number.
All my clients have my cell number and I like to go that extra mile. I have many long-lasting relationship clients who have been with us for over 10 years. I believe that what sets me apart is the time I invest in helping a customer, I am proud of the agency we are running and my mission is to offer a 100% customer satisfaction even for the customers that decide to leave us. We have had customers that leave us but in a couple of months, they come back.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course, Houston is a great place to start. We have a variety of cultures. The sun comes out for everyone. Houston has the tools and the instruments, it is up to you how to use them. If you look around Houston might have 3 restaurants in the same street, 4 insurance offices and they all manage to grow.
Houston is a great city to start I would not change my city for no other city, I might open in other cities? Why not? but H-Town is my hometown to grow a successful business no matter the size.
