Meet Jacob Crawford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Crawford.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was given my first camera (a Kodak 110) when I was in the sixth grade to take with me on camping trips with the Boy Scouts. I’m not sure my parents were prepared to spend so much time and money buying film and having photos developed for me. Since that day, I’ve always had a camera with me. My interest in it has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, but it is something that I find very therapeutic, comforting.

Photography is something that has always interested me and allows me to invest myself, if only briefly, in the frame of a moment. It allows me to capture something special and unique about the moment at hand.

Please tell us about your art.
I am an amateur photographer. The only method to my madness is being present and aware of my surroundings. More often than not, I’ve been inspired by something that jumps out at me in the corner of my eye … something in passing. I’ve made countless U-turns, detours and have frustrated many people by saying, “Hold on,” or “Wait, go back.”

Nature, architecture and animals are subjects that have always held more appeal to me than people. I enjoy taking portraits and candid photos of people, but what surrounds them has always captivated me more. Give me an abandoned building or a horse and I’ll choose it over a family photo shoot every time!

At the end of the day, if I’m able to offer the viewer of my photographs a glimpse of something they’ve never seen, or a perspective of an object that captivates them, then I’ve done what I set out to do. I want people to lose themselves in a landscape, to see their reflection in the eye of a horse or simply let go of everything and cry at the beauty of a west Texas sunset.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
For me, success is about following your heart and being passionate about something you love. Success has nothing to do with notoriety, celebrity status or money. It is about being authentic, loving and willing to go the distance for something you believe in. Authenticity and determination are essential to achieving what one sets out to do.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most of my work can be found on Instagram or my photography Facebook page. Anyone can direct message me regarding purchasing my work. A large percentage of the money I raise through the sale of my photography goes to a non-profit recovery center (Serenity Star) where I volunteer here in Smithville.

His photos show that he was born with the “eye”. Not everyone can look at a horse or a dog or clouds and see what Jacob sees with his camera. It is a true gift that he has and I am so glad he shares his gift. Someday Jacob and I will meet in person-now I just know him through my nephew and thru his talent with the camera!
