Meet Cori Aston of Cori Aston Makeup Artistry in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cori Aston.

Cori, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey as a makeup artist at 18 yrs. old…I was very fortunate to be selected by a fabulous company called Prescriptives Cosmetics. This particular company was based on custom blending, a pivotal learning experience for this young makeup artist, I was trained in custom blending which taught me to have a critical eye and complete understanding of Color Theory.

I then went on to work with a newly launching line – Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Another phenomenal experience & educational move. I began with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics as part of their launch team at Houston Galleria. I worked with Bobbi for the next 4 yrs.

Next, I chose to move into freelance. This allowed me to work with all the top luxury lines available – Sisley, Chanel, Lancôme, La Prairie, Laura Mercier, Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Christian Dior, etc. I learned each company, aesthetics, application & products. Another great learning experiences.

At this point, I had met some incredible people, built a strong client base, experienced & executed superb customer service and knew my knowledge & experience was strong enough to venture into being my own boss… I was ready to be more creative and be on my own.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over the years the struggles change…When I was young and freelance artists were truly self-taught, well experienced artist, there were only so many to go around. I had the best time…shooting with photographers, celebrity makeup for interviews, and a strong client base to keep me busy in between. It was great!

Everything shifted with the rise of social media and the insta-artist. Every field in art has taken a hit…models, artists, photographers, etc. EVERY ONE is an instant artist, model, photographer, etc. No experienced needed…just followers. It simply watered down the field, the creativity and, of course, the quality.

Cori Aston Makeup Artistry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cori Aston Makeup Artistry is a diverse entity. I am an artist first and foremost!

I have a strong client base in the most effluent areas of Houston where I am sought after for beauty, gala, bridal, head shots, print & special occasion makeup…I also specialize in Brows & Brow rehab.

I am lucky enough to say I have a niche for creative projects…I am a go-to artist for bringing a photographer’s editorial vision into reality or creating/directing my own visual concepts. I live for the avant-garde, the editorial & high fashion shoots!

This particular area is my jam…and I am very proud of the art I have created.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Once, when I was 20 yrs. old I was talking with another artist telling her all of what I wanted to achieve. She looked at me and asked “What is your definition of success?” I remember that moment to this day. Why? Because it made me reevaluate my idea of success. Before that moment, I thought only of higher levels of accolades, money, etc. What we all think of. But, what I really wanted was only 2 things: 1. To be THE BEST Mom to my 2 sons, their happiness to this day is paramount to anything else on this planet. 2. Respect. To be respected for my art. That is my definition of success.
