Today we’d like to introduce you to Karly Angol.
Karly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been creative. When I was younger, I would make my mother buy me a million disposable cameras and I would take pictures of my friends and myself. In college, I picked up my Canon camera and started creating YouTube videos and then from there I started taking pictures of myself and posting them on Instagram. People seemed to be very interested in my travel, lifestyle, and beauty habits. I fell in love with traveling and showing people that there is more to life than just buying stuff that will fill your home. My platform KarlySmiles is more than just an outlet for my creativity; it’s a community where like-minded people can find and share inspiration while making friends along the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I’ve faced so many challenges along the way. There have been many times when I just wanted to give up, but when I get into a funk I remember that creating content is exactly what makes me happy. I love using my creative side to express how I feel. I get overwhelmed why my audience isn’t growing or I am not getting brand deals that other bloggers are getting. I learned that comparison is the thief of joy! You are only in competition with yourself. Keep pushing and never let anyone dull your sparkle. What’s meant for you, will be for you.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into KarlySmiles story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a full-time girl boss entrepreneur. I love creating content that is based on beauty and travel. I want people to just live well. Don’t worry too much and just do what they love doing. I want everyone to be able to travel to places that you never thought they could travel to. I am most proud of my ability to showcase the places I’ve traveled to and actually enjoy being there. My brand showcases the way I live my life from day to day. Nothing is ever staged or made to seem like it’s not. KarlySmiles was the name I was given because I was always smiling, so when I take pictures, I make sure that I am smiling to match my name. Who is KarlySmiles without a smile?
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The biggest barriers today to female leadership is building a sisterhood. It’s one of the most challenging things in this industry. Getting support from other women is very hard. I want women to know that we shouldn’t be in competition with each other. We should be building each other up instead of tearing each other down. I want women to support and empower each other.
