Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Premazon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Paul. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got my start back in 1985, when I when I owned a mattress shop off of I-10. At the time, I started ordering a particular incense I liked, but I ordered in bulk (to save on cost). I started selling the rest in my shop. Soon, I started getting requests for similar products and my customer base started growing by word of mouth. I had to expand the “incense and herb” business to the back of the mattress store, and before I knew it, The Magick Cauldron was born. In 1985, it was so big it had grown into its own store. It was doing so well, and I was much happier working with the customers of the Cauldron, anyway, I decided to close my Mattress store and go all in.
The rest is history.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is never a “smooth road” with any retail business, especially if you’re a single owner vs. a large chain. If you have a good day or a good weekend in the shop, it’s great. But if customers are struggling, it shows in the business (again, just as it does in the retail market in general).
If the retail market is struggling, some stores may raise prices or lay off employees. I haven’t done that yet. I don’t like to operate that way. I just keep going through the dip, knowing things will come back up.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Magick Cauldron – what should we know?
The Magick Cauldron is a metaphysical shop in Houston, TX. We specialize in selling things you might want or need for Pagan, Wiccan, or other spiritual paths. We have a huge library of books for sale in a variety of topics, bulk incense and herbs, incense and oil burners, etc… We also have a selection of crystals and stones, tarot decks, statues, candles, oils and altar supplies. But wait! There’s more! Lots more. Interested? Curious? You should come by and say hello. We specialize in education. We’ll talk to you and answer any questions you have. Our primary goal is to be there for our customers, whatever their needs.
That’s what we’re most proud of as a company and what we feel sets us apart from everyone else. The community knows they can come to us, whether or not they’re purchasing, just to ask questions. If they don’t know something about a certain path, we can help them. If they’re just curious about something, they come ask.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
John Burghard and Brenda Gravitt
Thomas John Grieves
Ashley, Matt, Lillith, Lucas, Craig, and all of our TRF crew
I couldn’t have done any of this without these people.
My mentor and teacher, Thomas John Grieves.
John Burghard was a lifelong friend and was there from the birth of The Magick Cauldron until he recently passed. He was the face of The Magick Cauldron, and we all miss him.
Brenda Gravitt was also with me through the evolution of the shop. She was an excellent teacher and more than just an employee. She, too, has passed beyond the veil.
My current crew: Ashley, Matt, Lillith, Luke, Craig, They keep things going for me, when I’m there and when I’m not. They’re some of the best people I know.
My crew for the shops at Texas Renaissance Festival. They’re teammates and…. I consider them to be family.
She probably won’t see this, but I have to thank my ex-wife. Nancy pushed me to get started and open up The Magick Cauldron, and go “all in”. She also helped with the investment on the shops at Texas Renaissance Festival.
My wife, Cyndi, deserves credit. She’s my support, my cheerleader, and my tech goddess. I don’t know what I’d do without her. I love her very much.
Lastly, our customers. They’ve played the biggest role in the success of the business. We truly wouldn’t be here without them.
