Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney DeCuir.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Being the oldest of 5, I started doing hair fairly young to help my mom out. Since then, I’ve always been in somebody’s head from braiding my classmate’s hair in PE to helping out at my aunt’s salon back home in Baton Rouge. When I went off to college, I did a little hair on the side for extra money. That was when my aunt told me I should be in beauty school. Fast forward 2 years and I packed up my little Honda with what little I had & made my move to Houston. From there, I went to Ogle in Stafford while helping care for my elderly aunt & working as a server at Pappadeaux. After I graduated, I was hired at my first salon with no clientele and no idea how I’d get any. I took every walk-in I could & since I didn’t know anyone, made it my mission to attract as many people as I could through Instagram & eventually word of mouth. 3 years later, I’ve stepped out on faith & started my own small business in my salon suite in Salons by JC in Pearland. Through all my ups and downs, I’m so grateful for my journey & excited for what’s to come!
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has been anything but easy. There have been days where I didn’t know how I would make ends meet, I’ve slept in my car, & even took the bus to get to school because I needed my hours. Building a solid clientele from scratch in a city I was not familiar with, away from my family and friends stretched me like nothing else has, but I’m so happy with the woman it has made me. It has forced me to see the world through different lenses. Starting a new journey is indeed a scary thing to do, but my advise? START. & then keep going. Stay true to who you are but be open to change. Be teachable. Be flexible. Be genuine. Know that not every client/customer is for you and that’s okay. But the ones who are WILL find you. & lastly, put your blinders on, sis, & do not compare yourself to anyone else! Being you is your power!
We’d love to hear more about Whitney DeCuir Hair Artistry/whitney the stylist.
I am a natural hairstylist specializing in HEALTHY hair. The goal is always to chase healthy hair & let the rest fall into place. As a service provider, I’m so proud of the relationships (& hair) that have grown from meeting me at my chair. My clients are my extended family & I show my love and gratitude through my work and my respect & consideration for their wants and needs.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I usually just start each day with a prayer that God grants me the wisdom & patience to deal with each situation as no two clients are the same. We all have different needs and I try to adjust to meet them as I see fit. The “Today with the Lindsey’s” app is a pick me up as well. Each day, there is a new inspirational alert with a quick word inside.
