Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Okoro.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Houston and raised in Lubbock, but I have spent most of my adult life in Austin. My desire to create of art grew from my love of fashion and how clothing can be used for storytelling. I took a different path than many artists. I graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a major in psychology and a minor in fashion design. Then I received my law degree from Texas Southern University in Houston. I went on to become a journalist, but I always returned to creating art.
Please tell us about your art.
Although my practice mostly focuses on painting, I am also experimenting with fashion design and video work. To create a painting, I take photographs of my subject for reference. When I paint, I use color and texture to catch the viewer’s eye and conjure the spirit of the subject. A lot of the composition and poses in my pieces are inspired by some of my favorite fashion campaigns. I hope that some people can see themselves in my work or at least relate in some way.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Feeling isolated as an artist is definitely something I’ve struggled with. What’s helped me is getting involved in local art shows and events. Social media has also been a great tool that helped me to connect with artists over the years.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can support my work by sharing. I am @dawnokoro on most social media. I also have prints and originals available for purchase on my site okorostudio.com. I also have several solo shows coming up in 2019 where people can see my work in person.
