Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennie Turner.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My name is Jennie Turner. I was raised in a two-parent home and was brought up with strong Christian values. However, at the age of 14 I became pregnant. I decided to tackle the challenge head on and raise my child. I decided at a young age that my mistakes don’t define who I am. I would work hard and show people that you can still be successful no matter the adversities you face in life! I was ridiculed by the general public for being pregnant at such an early age. I was told that I should be ashamed of myself and that my future was over before it started. Those people only motivated me to aim high. I took on an extensive program at my high school that allowed me to earn my high school diploma in less than 3 years instead of four, I took on 12 classes while most students were taken 8 or less. At the age of 16, I graduated high school and set my sights on college, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. I didn’t want to stop there. I temporarily moved to Phoenix Arizona and was granted the opportunity to work for Grand Canyon University and obtain my Master’s degree. I graduated with an MBA in Strategic Human Resource Management.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is my ability to transform lives! I always had a passion for criminal justice. I was offered a job to move back to Houston Texas working for the parole division. I currently work as the office Workforce Developer and Independent Living Coordinator, I wear several hats which includes mentoring the youth of East Texas and making sure they become productive citizens by assisting with employment opportunities, education, and building self-worth. I often host seminars and give motivational speeches to our youth so they feel inspired to change their lives for the better, I tell my story to people all the time, especially young girls, so they know there is hope for the future! I want people to know that nobody can design your life for you, only you can. There are so many people who are struggling with the decisions they have made in life, God put it on my heart to help others become the best version of themselves.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I am always open to working with others who love to make a difference, I do what I do for FREE. The reward is being able to say you changed a life today versus searching for monetary gain, I would encourage other artists to do it from their heart without expecting anything in return, A little bit of your time could make such a huge impact! How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The Justice Department is always looking for mentors, People are welcome to reach out to see if this would be a good fit for them. Also, I mentor people outside of work.
