Today we’d like to introduce you to James Greathouse.
Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been singing since I was a kid. I didn’t take it seriously until I was in college. I was able to sing background for different artists and I was able to tap into the live music scene in the city. After a few years of doing both, I decided it was time to start making my own music. I was introduced to the super talented producer of my album, Ced Smith. He taught me about the recording process from start to finish. It took a lot of work, but I am proud to have recently released my debut album, “Radio.” There are visuals for the first two singles from the album, Toast and Forever. Forever has already been featured in numerous publications throughout the world and I can only say that I’m grateful!
Has it been a smooth road?
This has been a long road. The album took about 4 years to complete from start to release. I learned a lot along the way, especially about recording and the music business. There were times that I didn’t think I would able to get the album completed, due to financial issues and other obstacles, but I had amazing support from family and friends. More importantly, I had a producer who was patient and willing to teach me the process step by step.
We’d love to hear more about your career so far.
I am an R&B/Soul recording artist and an actor. I recently released my first studio album, but I have been singing around the city and the SW region of the US for years. I’ve been in numerous plays since I was a teenager, and I have been singing since before then. I think was sets me apart is that I am determined to bring back love songs. My favorite eras of music are the 70’s and the 90’s. I believe that songs were stories back then. I want to help bring that back. I’m a big guy, but I’ve got a smooth voice. People don’t always expect that.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think that Houston is one of the most talented cities in the world. That is a good thing and a bad thing. Its a good thing because you are able to network like crazy with the amount of vocalists and musicians. The bad thing is that there are so many vocalists and musicians it can sometimes be hard to make your way into the live music scene. I would recommend that someone who is just starting out find what makes them stand out and use that to get noticed. There are platforms, but you have to find what makes you special. As a city, I would just say keep supporting our local talent. I was completely surprised that my album release concert sold out, and then, my friend Jack Freeman’s sold out, and then, Tobe Nwigwe’s concert sold out. All three independent artists here in Houston, I’m beyond proud of my city for the support.
