Meet Patricia Donham of Upper Bay Frame & Gallery in League City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Donham.

Patricia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I taught school for 23 years, and for the last 10 years of that career I also had a faux finishing and mural business. When it came time to retire, I knew that I wanted to stay in the art field in some capacity and owning a frame shop seemed to combine my artistic skills with “handyman” capabilities. I found this wonderful little frame shop in Nassau Bay, bought it and brought it back to life through offering local original art, hand thrown pottery, local jewelry and home decor. I also added a wide format 12 color printer so that people could get their photos off their phone and onto their walls and the artists would have a place to get quality giclees done. Three years ago, I moved the shop to League City to a much larger space where I incorporated a classroom where we offer art lessons daily. I’ve expanded the home decor and gift aspect and I carry Amitha Verma Chalk Finish Paints, which are very popular for refinishing furniture. Of course fine custom framing is still our main business.

We have events regularly–art shows for local artists, special classes and workshops, and painting parties– that are always fun.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A frame shop is not only a retail business but also encompasses manufacturing and service; and going from teaching school to running such a business has had a steep learning curve!

Plus, moving locations was a huge expense as well as a challenge as far as reminding people just where we are! The trick to overcoming those obstacles is to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, taking step after step, until you’re on the other side.

Upper Bay Frame & Gallery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are truly Custom Framers. With my experience in faux finishing and creative background, we can think outside the box to make your art, your memories, your space reflect your individual taste. We keep informed about the latest practices and trends and take classes regularly in specialty techniques so that we can offer things like gilding, French mats, flexible fillets, specialty staining and toning, hand painted bevels that other framers do not offer.

And our customer service is the absolute best!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Certainly the health of my company is a marker for success, but just as important is the good will in my community and customer satisfaction and loyalty.
