Art & Life with Graciela Socorro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Graciela Socorro.

Graciela, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in Venezuela following my interest in astrophotography and aerospace engineering. However, I decided to change careers after I found a deeper and meaningful connection with nature through photography.

I have always found myself surrounded by art. Since I was a little girl, I used to watch my mom painting on canvas every night, on the other hand, my dad’s huge Nat Geo magazines collection inspired my love for photography. These conditions sparked my growing interest in the arts.

I made various studies in photography following patterns, colors, shapes and textures exploring the outdoors with my husband Carlos. I also started to explore with painting and sculpture expressing the joy for color and geometry on a project called Bindu.

Years later, my husband and I moved to Houston where we have been working and creating art. Always grateful for all the support of our friends and the Houston art community.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Photography

I love what butterflies represent, and how their shape, texture a colors play with the environment. The butterfly represents change and evolution and I like to express this kind of message to the public.

Bindu

Bindu represents to me the joy for color and geometry. it means dot or point in Sanskrit. The circle represents unity, wholeness, infinity and all colors combined are a celebration of life and wonder. The work is made out of layers of acrylic paint and resin on different medium: hand-made clay sculptures, panels, and reclaimed objects.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
My experience during all these years as an artist is that when you believe in yourself, and know in your heart that your work has a value you will create the right conditions to sell it or to bring attention to it. To stay positive and have faith in your goals is the best advice that I can give to an artist with financial concerns.

There are many authors that have inspired me to stay positive and believe in myself. My favorite book is “The Power is Within You” by Louise Hay.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
