Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Brown and Paul Como.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael and Paul. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My best friend Paul and I had an idea for an ” outside the box” podcast. We were both so sick and tired of listening to the same old sports radio, and generic lifestyle podcasts that had no flavor or soul to it. Paul and I both grew up in Houston, and we wanted to give our social media following something that was centered around our lives, and the amazing people we have around us.
One day, we were at a local watering hole, and I looked over, and said, ” DUDE, Let’s do a show called Beer.Sports.Whatever. ” He immediately jumped at the idea, and this the saying goes, ” The rest is history.”
In that time, we have amassed over 500 followers on Facebook, 65+ subscribers on Sound Cloud, and have hosted three live recordings at local breweries/sports bars. We just recorded our 18th episode, and have recently brought on two social media managers, and a full-time writer for the show.
Our number one goal is to produce a high-quality podcast, but we also focus heavily on inviting our friends and family onto the show to give them a platform for what they have to say to our audience. When someone listens to an episode of our show, we want them to truly feel like a part of our family.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My answer to this would be it has definitely not been the smoothest road, but we would not have it any other way. When we started this show, it was with the understanding that we were building something from the very bottom.
In the beginning, we did not have any of the equipment, nor had either one of us had ever done anything on the radio or recording a show side. However, we worked it out together, and our friendship has never been stronger. Paul and I have a joint view on what we would like to see the show become, and we will continue to work every single day to achieve that goal.
I believe the biggest struggle along the way had/ has to be the ability to get our name out there. In today’s day and age, you almost to have force feed your show onto people, and consistently follow up with them to give the show a listen, and to let you know how they feel about it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beer.Sports.Whatever. Podcast – what should we know?
I would not necessarily describe our podcast as a business or a company, but we treat it as such. Each and every day, we continue to look at what we can do to get our name out there. With the money being spent on the show coming out of our own personal pockets, it has pushed us to be smart with where we spend the money because we have to be.
Our show is known as one that has fun with everything that we do. Each and every one of our episodes displays Paul, and I’s chemistry with how we discuss various topics. We may not always agree, but we will have fun with whatever side of the fence we fall on.
We are most proud of our ability to co-exist together and provide such a different array of opinions on such differing topics. Paul and I grew up down the street from one another, and he is an African-American stud baseball player, and I am a goofy Jewish kid who excelled in the theater world. Our society would deem us unable to understand where each of us came from, but I believe that is what makes us special. We have this ability to disagree but in a very professional and respectful manner.
What sets us apart from other people is that our show has a unique cast of characters that you will not find anywhere else. We have our buddy Alex come on as our soccer guest, we have our buddy Justin come on for our “Oh Canada” guest, and the list goes on and on. We have been very fortunate to find a group of buddies that love the show and will do whatever they can to help us out.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First of all, I would like to thank my brother, Paul Como. His willingness to take this ride with me was so amazing; it is hard to truly express how thankful I am. Without him, we would not be where we are today.
My family, Louis, Renee, and Jessica… I love you guys more than you know.
The true original listeners of the show who have been there since day 1: Brandon, Austin, Justin, Greg, Alex, Sean, Trey, Ryan D., JD, Aaron, and the rest of all of our loyal listeners… THANK YOU.
My true mentor in college was my guy Terence Turner, also known as “T-TIME”… I love you man, thanks as always for all of the support!!
