Meet DJ Supastar of Supastar Enterprises/Supastar Spin Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Supastar.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had just graduated Prairie View A&M University and was working at AT&T when one day after work I had the urge to go buy “Dj equipment”. My roommates thought I was crazy, so we walked to Guitar Center and I purchased my starter “FUnK Master Flex” kit. I had no idea how to set it up, but I figured out the red and white cords, lol!

I was so anxious to get started that I went to the record store the next day and purchased 2 records that had nothing to do with one another, I just knew the songs. Anyway went home and started playing around. When I started djing, isn’t popular for females, as it is now, so it was hard finding someone to take me seriously. Until one day hanging out, Ali (comedian) walks up and starts talking, eventually gets into the topic of music and says he is apart of a “Record Pool” (that’s how you got your records heard in the clubs back then) I told him I had just started and was teaching myself.

He then goes to say you should join my record pool and by the way, my best friend is a DJ at the local radio station, and he is looking for someone to train. So I use to go up to the radio station every Saturday for a couple of months and during that time would throw house parties and invite my friends and co-workers over to the house and would “DJ.” My very first gig was my friend’s wedding, and I had no idea what I was doing, I played what I wanted to hear if I was in the audience, and it worked.

After that, I slowly started with gigs, like every summer djing for “NikePro Am” games at Fonde Rec center, where a lot of the NBA players played every year. I was still working at AT&T and still had a good hobby going. I ended up getting in rotation at the Open Mic spot called “Poetry Lounge Houston ” and I thought I was the “ish”, lol! This went on for 2 years, then I got pregnant in 2003. Married in 2005. Widowed in 2006.

My life stopped! I couldn’t understand it. I had just received a djing job at “St. Johns Downtown Church” djing for the youth, by the way, I had no experience in that genre of music, but I was determined to figure it out. I had to postpone that job for two months until I was able to muster up enough strength to move on. I ended up quitting my good paying job at AT&T and started trying to find myself, in that, I decided to start my youth job at the church.

Well, little that I knew, djing every Sunday at church with kids, was helping me grieve and it allowed me to Push thru my Pain, and that’s when I knew I had a bigger purpose and the rest is History!! After that things started popping up from everywhere!! From MAC cosmetics, Djing for Solange’s son bday party, Saks, etc… I just knew I was on a roll. Things were looking up.

I started back working so I could have insurance for my daughter. So I worked in corporate America from 2007-2013. For those six years, I hustled towards my dream all while working and trying to adjust to being a single mom. In 2011, there was a new reality show for DJ’s, and I knew they were coming to Houston for tryouts. It crossed my mind but I was too scared.

Needless to say, I went to the audition made it to the 2nd round and ended up getting a standing ovation from Kid Capri, Dj Mars, & Victor Duplaix. I ended up on BET, Master of The Mix Season 2, that was definitely a career changer! 2013, I quit my corporate job and decided to go all in and open my Dj School. You remember when I started, no one wanted to teach me, so I said when I go to a certain point I would start a DJ school just for girls.

So I did, and in 2013, Supastar Spin Academy was launched. One of my biggest dream was accomplished. I was still djing and running a business, well I had always wanted to be on the radio since I started but was turned down several times. It wasn’t until Media personality, Devi Dev asked me to start djing on her show on 93.7 The Beat!! I was so excited, as I already was djing holidays. I have been enjoying this roller coaster ride these last 5 years, and since then I now DJ on 93.7 The Beat Mon-Fri at Noon, Mondays on Fox 26 with Isiah Carey.

And recently, I can now add “On Air Personality”, to my resume with “Afternoon Drive,” Mon-Fri, 3:00-7:00 on our sister station “104.5 Kiss” with Steve Harvey in the mornings. I am grateful for everything I have endured and can’t wait to see what the future holds!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely losing my husband at a young age was one struggle I had to endure. Also being a female in a male-dominated field is an everyday struggle in itself.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Supastar Enterprises / Supastar Spin Academy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am “The Jill Of all Trades”! LOL. I wear many hats, and I love it!! People know me from djing everything and everywhere. I have dj’d probably at every club in Houston to see there name change twice, lol! I have dj’d at several churches, festivals, conferences, etc. I have literally done 487 weddings (but who’s counting)…

I still do all of the above plus my two radio stations & TV. But the MOST PROUD event I dj’d was for Beyonce & Jay-z for “On The Run – I” after party! One of the best night EVER! What sets me apart from others is that I genuinely have a passion for music so I can rock any crowd anywhere and still have fun while doing it!
