Today we’d like to introduce you to Sin Perez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sin. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My introduction to hip-hop as a kid was breakdancing and graffiti, I always loved the music, but I never got into the emcee’ing until later as a teenager. I started off doing the freestyle part of rapping which is rhyming off the top of your head with some of my boys from my neighborhood RBT. I was going through some real tough times at the age 15 and me being the oldest of four, I didn’t like to leave home because my siblings would have been there alone.
So since we always had the house to ourselves we often had all our friends over. It was the party spot for us, and one day my boy Rigo was trying to convince everyone into freestyling and I had kept saying rapping isn’t for me but after enough smoke I finally said ok and I spit some rhymes but at a very fast pace because at that time I was heavy into Bone Thugs N Harmony and the reaction I got from my boys was crazy and just made me feel like if I kept at it I could get better so every day after that all I did was rhyme words so when we all met up on the weekends I was ready and prepared.
We recorded our freestyles and songs we came up with on cassette tapes through a karaoke machine that belonged to my youngest sister because it was all we had. A year after that, my little brother JaydotPerez and I went to Corpus Christi to spend the summer with my mother and we were introduced to a guy named Jon Chris aka Pop who signed us to his own indie label named RockEmUp Records after hearing us rap, he was impressed by the way we rapped and what we rapped about so he wanted us to be on his label and linked us up with his artist that was around our age named Boss Medrano to start the first group on his label that would be called the young crew.
We learned the whole process of recording and songwriting from him while we were there and he even showed us all we needed was a computer a microphone and a certain software to record our music the way he was recording so eventually we could get the same equipment to keep recording when we came back to Houston. I started making beats through the same recording software he showed us and I did my best to make them sound good and the reason I started making beats was because I was tired of rapping over instrumentals that were downloaded from the internet.
I wanted my boys and I to have original beats so we could make more original music and also because we didn’t know anybody that made beats. One day, I was given a demo version of the software that let you completely make beats from scratch by my boy Drin, I spent every day messing with it till I learned everything about it and eventually over time I bought better software and equipment just about everything required to have a nice home studio with good quality. I’ve put out many mixtapes and songs over the years, I have been featured in XXL Magazine. I’m in the Guinness book of world records with Barron Studios in Houston as a recording artist on the worlds longest cypher and have been offered several record deals as a recording artist.
I have performed all over Houston and have opened up for just about every big known artist in Houston. I started my own music production company in 2015 named Sinstrumental Productionz, LLC where I released my first three independent albums and three singles available on all streaming sites and have been producing for many other local Indie artists on the come up as well as established artist like South Park Mexican and Lucky Luciano. I have also produced theme songs and music for new music platforms that interview local artist like Str8 From The City and Hustle Town Network which is in partnership with the local radio station in Houston named 97.9 and also for several short films like The Blue Print where I also had a small acting role in.
My love for music has not changed and I will continue to produce and record music as long as I’m alive not only for myself but also for my little brother Stevie Ray and my boy Pop they both passed away in 2007. My music is based off my everyday life past and present both good and bad and you can hear it all in my music. I release music every year and I release weekly webisodes on youtube titled ‘Beatz From Scratch’ showing myself making beats in my home studio The Music Room.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, I’ve had so many things come in my way, and many times I have wanted to quit like the year my little brother Stevie passed away from suicide.
I lost my mind, I went on a dark road for months. I was overusing prescription pills to black it out or the time I found out my boy Pop was murdered by someone he trusted I went into depression knowing two people that really believed in me more than I believed in myself were no longer alive, but I always thought about what they said to me before they passed and it’s my motivation till this day to keep me going.
Also, one year, I violated probation and was in and out of jail, and court fighting for my freedom and I thought I was going to be in prison for several years, so my mind was nowhere on music but those main things there have been my main inspiration and motivation, and truly that’s what pushed me to start my own music production company because I felt I would never fully take this music seriously if I didn’t put my all into it.
Sinstrumental Productionz – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My music production company specializes in making a whole song for an artist from scratch. Sometimes they come with an idea, and they tell me they want a certain kind of beat for their song. And I have them explain the vibe to me, and I create exactly what they want or they come with a song prepared but might not have the beat they want because the beat they used was either a known artist beat or a mixtape use beat.
So I’ll recreate the beat to their song but make it sound completely original and still match the vibe they were going with. I’m known for making good beats in a short amount of time my Beatz From Scratch webisodes gives some insight, and there isn’t any kind of beat that I can’t make, old school hip-hop, new school hip-hop, r&b, etc.
What separates me from the rest is my creativity and my will to make the artist happy that they came to me, I always make the artist want to come back because they know they are going to get the type of instrumental they wanted, but it will be fixed up better than they imagined.
I’m most proud of my own albums of work because I was able to create what I felt and I was able to show that I’m talented as a songwriter as well as a producer.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is setting a goal and accomplishing it no matter what comes in between. I feel I’ve reached several personal marks of success that I set for myself, but the next main mark of success.
I’m aiming for is getting the main artist I produce for as well as myself to get our music more out there to the point they are known artist and become so known they get played through mainstream radio.
