Meet Rosa Valdovinos of Art de Rosa & Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosa Valdovinos.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hola me llamo Rosa. I am a Mexican-American artist from Oxnard, California; my family is from Michoacán, Mexico. I am currently an artist and photographer in Baytown, Tx and surrounding areas. I am also an art instructor for the University of Houston-Clear Lake School of Art for Children and Young Adults.

From discovering my art skills in junior high to graduating from the University of Houston-Clear Lake with a Bachelor of Fine Art Studio Concentration and an Art History Minor, I’ve tried to have art in my life in any and every way possible. I believe that art gives us a foundation to discover our passions and the type of person we want to be in the world. I like that I can be diverse with my art skills and use them to bring other people happiness.

From doing commission pieces to capturing special moments for clients, designing graduation invites, to teaching students of different ages to love art the way I do. I want to add my little bit of talent and bring a bigger representation to the Mexican art community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having immigrant parents have given me the roots to grow strong. Yet it has shown me the difficulties that life can throw at us in order to really bloom into a kind and prosperous person. Since I first realized that I wanted to be an artist I have always tried my best, I always say to give 150% in everything you do. But it hasn’t always been a smooth ride, I think everyone always goes with the “oh you’re going to be an artist, what are you going to do with that?”.

I believe, however, that there is a wide range of crafts and careers that can be created from being an artist. No, life isn’t always “omg I love your art, can I buy it?”, it’s more like a lot of artist blocks and exhausting myself trying to market my business to bring in more photography clientele and not always succeeding. But I think that with time and patience great things happen, I really try to maintain a positive aura and mindset so I can let my creativity grow freely.

Please tell us about Art de Rosa & Photography.
I like to call my art and photography businesses “Art de Rosa or Art de RosaPhotography” since I want to add a little Spanish sass in there with the “de.”

I am an artist who does commission artwork, privates art classes, and paint parties. I also, teach at the University of Houston-Clear Lake School of Art for Children and Young Adults part-time. My photography business began during my final year of undergrad in 2016, I think what my clients really appreciate is my being able to speak in Spanish and being able to bring their “perfect picture” dreams into reality.

In all, I am thankful, that when a client contacts me for whatever purpose I can bring in a variety of skill sets and services to whatever they may need. It always fills me with joy to know that I can use my art skills to make someone’s life better and grow as an artist myself.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would definitely tell myself to start doing art younger, to practice it more even when I get frustrated or have a bad day. The way my art started growing once I began doing it more often is something I wish I would have told myself to do sooner.
