Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Mulvihill.
Mary, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
One day, I came home from school and found my mother decorating a chocolate cake. She tells me I asked her if I could try to make one of the little flowers she was attempting to master and a few minutes later, the result was a perfect little rose. At that moment, she decided I would have art lessons and at the age of eight, signed me up with a local artist. After years of working, dabbled in the arts, and painting in the garage when I had time, I started getting involved in the Ventura County art scene in California. I had two city sponsored shows and had one of my designs chosen for a cutout to be used to promote tourism at the Buena Ventura Mission site.
After moving to Texas from Newbury Park, California with my husband and three very unhappy kitties in the back seat, I found the Sugar Land Art Studio and Gallery and opened my own studio. It has been a wonderful experience working among and collaborating with all the talented people there in a warm and creative space.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Typically, I work with acrylic paints but have also used oil and watercolor. For me, having my own studio has allowed me to enjoy the challenge of trying new mediums and new techniques resulting in pieces that vary in style. But, whatever I’m doing, I like the result to provoke emotion. I want people to feel something when they look at my work. This can be achieved through imagery, color, or technique. I’ve just started playing with clay and am enjoying doing something more three-dimensional.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
