Meet Carra Sykes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carra Sykes.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been drawing since I could pick up a writing instrument and using my imagination since basically forever. Growing up, I focused mainly on soccer and art and found a place in each that felt like home. My work has had many inspirations throughout the years. At 25, I publicly came out as gay and have been creating art inspired by my life and others I meet along the way. I’m 30 now, and there is still so much to learn and make. I’ll never stop learning.

Please tell us about your art.
I make all kinds of things, mostly because I’m curious about the process. I have a background in design which has helped me fulfill my love of problem-solving. Lately, I’ve put my focus on being better at illustration. When I’m not illustrating, I can be found trying to sew something new. I make banners from felt, and my next venture is going to be designing and making clothing if I can find some spare time.

I want the art I make to be fun, approachable, and also make people think. I can’t change the world with one poster design, but maybe I can make a positive impact on anyone who comes across what I make. Everything I make, even the simple design layout things, has care and a thoughtful approach behind the work.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
One of the biggest challenges is people not valuing the time and work artists put in to make something unique for clients and audiences. I also think we live in a world where we see so many things all day and everyday art gets lost in the image-overload. We are so quick to double tap and move on when maybe we should stop and see what we are seeing.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I post almost everything to Instagram on @carrasykes. You can also find my work on my website carrasykes.com. If you like my work and know of anyone needing design or illustration and think I’d be a good fit, pass my info along! Also, if you are on Instagram and use stories, I had the exciting honor of making two of the pride stickers that can still be used!
